What's with Jacob's name?

open to all....................

Ever notice Jacob has problems with his new name Israel?

These two names are used interchangeably in the same sentence, though-out the Bible.

I am curious to hear what you think.

Hello everyone:

Names,hmmm

Ya'aqob--Jacob:

Jacob = "heel holder" or "supplanter"

1) son of Isaac, grandson of Abraham, and father of the 12 patriarchs of the tribes of Israel

H3290

יעקב

ya‛ăqôb

yah-ak-obe'

From H6117; heel catcher (that is, supplanter); Jaakob, the Israelitish patriarch: - Jacob.

Israel = "God prevails"

H3478

ישׂראל

yiśrâ'êl

yis-raw-ale'

From H8280 and H410; he will rule as God; Jisrael, a symbolical name of Jacob; also (typically) of his posterity: - Israel.

I remember reading a few years ago the Israel means:

Soldier of GOD..

Shalom and Chesed:

St.George

heel catcher would be the more accurate meaning. He grabbed Esaus' heel at birth. Supplanter is more of a slander towards Jacob because of what he did to Isaac which happened long after his birth.

hello Trucker,

thanks for your input...

what gets to me is that in Genesis particularly, The names Jacob and Israel switch from sentence to sentence, as if they are two different people.

sorry, dont have my Bible with me...

but, somewhere towards the end of Genesis when Israel blesses his sons before dying these 2 names are interchanged.

also in Psalms..

When Abram's name was changed to Abraham, never do you see his orginal name again.

When I first read the Bible, this was very confusing until I realized they were the same person Israel and Jacob.

I find this curious.

I too tend to find it a bit confusing. God changed Jacob's name to Israel twice (Gen 32:28 and 35:10), but for some reason he usually is refered to by the name of Jacob. This is in contrast to Abram being changed to Abraham.

My best guess, and it is only a guess, is that the name Jacob is used instead of Israel to remove any confusion between the person and the people of Israel.
