Sunday 9-12-10 Pastor Alex sermon: Money Matters Matt 25:15-30

1) God Owns It All:

America did not ..DID NOT invent money!! God made money and has money enough for everything. God created economy, money etc. He said its hard for rich people to get into Heaven because of their love of money. The love of money is the root of all evil.

Money brings out pride, greed, lusts etc. If people love money more than God then they will not get into Heaven. If the rich man has to choose between God and the dollar bill, He will choose the dollar bill. God owns it ALL and its not ours! Whether we are poor or rich, the money is STILL Gods! In the parable of the talents, God wanted the people to be RESPONDSIBLE with the money they were given. We want to NOT be bound by our financial situation.

2) Christians Are Subject to the Economy Just Like Everybody Else:

We need to STOP thinking that because we are Gods children, the world economy wont affect us. We are subject to the economic conditions of this world also. We need to be like Joseph in Genesis and do what he did. He prepared for the seven year famine, seven years before it came, by laying up food in storehouses. He was ready and prepared when the famine finally came. We need to do like Joseph and prepare, save up, lay up and do things to BE prepared before the next crisis.

** STOP RESISTING GOD !!

A) Seek Wisdom with our finances!

B) Have Integrity in our dealings!

C) Dont Go into Debt! We are slaves to the debtor. Do you want to be a slave? Be careful, pursue God to get info on how to handle our money. Cry out to God and

He will show us mighty things. God will help us prepare for future dealings in the economy.

3) Tithing Is A Reminder From God:

Tithing reminds us that God owns ALL the MONEY. Tithing reminds us that we ARE subject to the world economy. God is trying to get our attention thru the tithes.

***Tithing is NOT an Old Testament law. Jesus said for us to pay tithes and taxes: Render to God the things that are His and render to Caesar the things that are his.

***The Church is NOT always talking about money. We need to be about the Kingdom business and it takes money to reach people with the gospel. So give your 10% tithe and move on with Gods plan for your life.

****Be Kingdom Minded With Our Money!!!

****We are going to face Jesus one day and our reward is going to be based on how we did what He asked us to do!!

****We just need to manage our money the way God wants us to!!

****We need to ask ourselves are we doing it Gods way to be economically success?

Amen

This is another example of what I call "Interpulation". An interpretation of the Bible in a way that allows leadership to manipulate their congregation into doing whatever it is they need them to do because "the Bible says so". Interpretation that results in manipulation. Oh really?

First of all the Gospel of Matthew in 25: 15-30 has nothing to do with money. Not a thing!. This is the parable of talents. It is Jesus describing what will happen to the unfaithful and faithful servants. Not a thing about money. Of course this passage is very common in tithing preaching.

The fact is that the New Testament says nothing about Christians tithing. It tells us to be hilarious givers, to love our neighbors and to be willing to lay down our lives for our friends. This far surpasses tithing, don't you think? THe purpose of the tithe in the OT was to support the priests and Levites. after 70 a.d. there weren't any priests because ther was not temple, The lifestyle that was full of sacrificing animals and crops was over. The new life under the Law of Christ involves a different kind of sacrificing that was exemplified by Jesus death on the cross.

He says: "Christians Are Subject to the Economy Just Like Everybody Else:" The economy is the heart and soul of the world system. The NT refers to this as "the world". The world is a political and religious system that is anti-Christ in it's nature. As new creatures in Christ we are no longer of this world and so therefore no longer subject to it. The economy is what it is and hte effect it has on a person depends on their involvement in it. The question would be something like, "Is your money being invested in the stock market or the mission field?" We are back to the parable of the talents aren't we? What did you do with what I gave you?.

As for the creation of money well, that was not God's idea. Man came up with the world system through the sinful nature so it follows that man created money. The only currency in God's economy is blood. Remember, Jesus paid the ransom with His blood not with His money.

I have to respond to this too. "Tithing is NOT an Old Testament law. Jesus said for us to pay tithes and taxes: Render to God the things that are His and render to Caesar the things that are his." The actual verse is, Mat 22:21 "They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.

" In context Jesus has been asked by the Herodians whether it is lawful to pay tribute to the Roman Government. The tribut was a kind of tax but it was more like a contribution than a tax. The tribute in Jerusalem was used to pa y the expenses of maintaining the temple. This tribute was commonly looked upon as a tax meant to keep the people in subjection. If Jesus were to tell the Herodians it was legal to pay it then He would have the Pharisees claiming He was a heretic and if He said no then the Herodians would have him arrested for speaking out against Caesar. So He sort of splitting the difference. At least it sounded like He was.

This verse is not about money either. Jesus is talking about paying homage to the government verses paying homage to God. If you render unto Caesar then you are participating in the world system. If you pay homage to God you are participating in the Heavenly system. Which "government" will you choose to be a part of? We are back to "in the world but not of the world". We as Christians are not of the world therefore our allegiance is not to the government but to God. And again, I don't have to tithe!
