The word atonement in Hebrew is Kaphar. The first time it is used in the OT is in the narrative about Noah and the flood. It is the word that is translated "pitch". I think this is really very cool. Atonement is the payment that protects us from the judgment of God. The blood of sacrifices atoned for the sins of God's people and ultimately the blood of Jesus atoned for the sins of the whole world.

The use of the word Kaphar as the pitch on the ark built by Noah is the first example given to mankind of the coming atonement through our Messiah. The pitch was used to cover the inside and the outside of the ark. The kaphar kept the judgment of the flood out of the ark and kept what was in the ark from getting out and into the judgment.

In our experience the ark represents our Messiah. When we are in Him we are saved through the judgment. Peter alluded to this in 1 Pet 3. What's more, we are sealed in our salvation by the Holy Spirit. (God closed the door of the Ark.)

The kafar made by our Messiah completely covers us just as it did the ark and provides for us the payment due to the Father for our sins and delivers us from the wrath of His judgment.

@ Thunder:

Could the word Atonement also be broken down to

At-One-Ment.

The Atonement was meant to be through only one.

That's interesting George. Kind of like Justification is just as if there is no sin?
