Is anyone here familiar with the church and/or Mark's preaching? If so, I would be interested in hearing your thoughts (positive or negative)!

Oh, and we're not supposed to post links here, so I won't, but the church's website can easily be found via a search engine and you can read about the church there and listen to sermons, etc. So, if you're not already familiar with things and want to check them out and let me know what you think, that'd be cool.

I really enjoyed his sermon on dating. He seems to be fairly legit. I don't agree with him on everything, but he at least had the common sense to leave the Emerging Church.

Thanks for the feedback, Tulip!

I ask because I'm kinda church shopping and have sorta been contemplating giving Mars Hill another try. I visited the downtown Seattle one in January and it was *interesting* I guess you could say. It was definitely different from any other church service I've even been too... And it was really long... Almost a full 2 hours!

I had a few issues with things. The way they did communion was kind of odd, and the music was nothing I was familiar with and not at all my style, and there were a couple of things in the sermon that I would say were inaccurate maybe... Although when I discussed those things with some other people, they pretty much all said that I was just being really nit-picky and/or that Mark probably just misspoke (because he talks crazy fast). And they weren't big things and I can't even remember what they were now.

What I really like about the church is that people were really friendly. I felt like if I went regularly that I could get connected to some great people and have a lot of ministry options open to me.

Since January, I've listened to around a dozen of Mark's sermons online and have like them all and found them to be accurate. My only complaint there would be that he's a little rough around the edges sometimes. I know that a lot of people think that Mark is just horrible and I've gotten some less than nice feedback when I've told people that I listen to him sometimes... which has made me wonder if I was missing something and maybe shouldn't really be listening to him.

Then there's the fact that their closest church to me is a full hour away. But I've been thinking about moving a little close to Seattle proper anyway, so...

I say give it a shot. For the last 3 years I've been going to a church where I don't completely enjoy the music. The preaching, community, and pretty much everything else is excellent though, and I've found it extremely fulfilling. Even though I wish the music was more my style, I don't regret going at all. Heck, last year I became a member.

You should be able to get involved in a community group (or whatever they call them there) and get involved with Mars Hill pretty easily, especially if you move closer.

Out of curiosity, how do they do communion?

Well, they have 2 women stand up front, each holding a goblet. One of wine and one of grape juice. And then I think the bread was just on a table, if I remember correctly. But anyway, you broke off a piece of bread an dunked it in one of the goblets and then sorta made your way back to your seat. And they did it near the end of the service... Some people were getting up and leaving while this was going on. Others were standing around chatting. And the music was loud and distracting. The whole thing just seemed really irreverent.

Thanks, Hamilton. It's all kind of a big, complicated mess actually. I'm sort of attending the church I grew up in, but I just don't think it's the right place for me. Which is a long, complicated story. I was going to a Baptist church for 2 years, but left there last November (another long, complicated story). I was their volunteer children's ministry person. I don't know why I have such a difficult time making decisions like this. Small decisions. I make big decisions super quickly and deliberate over these small ones for eons. Anyway, I kind of want to find a church in a town where nobody really knows me (or, rather, where nobody knows my family) and Mars Hill seems like a good distance away. Honestly, it's so discouraging for me because I'm super shy and I hate going places by myself. The first time I went to Mars Hill, I had 3 of my friends with me. But 2 of them really didn't like it and the other girl went back to the Baptist church that I left and actually took my place as the children's ministry person. Maybe I should just stay at the church I grew up in.

Why should you stay at your childhood church? Because it's easy? Because it's safe? Or because you really, truly feel like you're being fed?

As for communion, you'd have to talk to someone there, but I've known a couple churches to do something similar. It's usually to make non-christians feel more comfortable while visiting. If it really intrudes on your taking of communion, maybe you should find somewhere else.

I say give it a chance. Visit for 4-6 weeks though so you get a good idea of what it's like to be a part of the church instead of just one visit one week.

Regarding staying at my childhood church: It's complicated. Part of it is that it's easier. It's 5 minutes from where I live, which is nice when you want to actually be involved. Part of it is that I feel that I can better minister to my family by attending the same church. While they profess to be Christians, I'm not real confident always that there's actual faith behind that. So, by attending the same church, it opens up conversations for us. Like, I usually go see my family Sunday evenings for dinner and I can bring up that morning's sermon and have some good conversation. My mother leads this Bible study at the church too and it's not real well attended and she has some self-esteem issues... And again, by going to her Bible study, it leads to some good conversations. Also, the church is right next door to a college and the local high school, which is great for outreach... and the new pastor they have is actually taking advantage of the church's proximity to the schools and trying to get some stuff going. And that's kind of exciting and something that I'd like to be a part of. BUT, there's a big long list of reasons why I really don't want to be at that church, despite the good points. It's non-denominational and their doctrine is right on, so it's not a horrible choice for a church, I guess.

@Hamilton- Yes, but I'm not in Seattle proper. I live about an hour outside of Seattle. More than an hour if traffic is bad!
