Why Is Matthew 8: 11-12 Missing From the New International Version?
Posted : 10 Aug, 2010 04:03 PM

My title may be too long and the last part of it may not show up - if Christian Dating For Free's word processor is set to limit the number of words in a title.

I came across the omission of Matthew 8: 11-12 in the NIV when posting about Revelation 13: 18 on another forum.

King James Version Matthew 8: 11-12:

"And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.

But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

New International Version (NIV) Matthew 8: 11-12: http://www.biblica.com/bible/verse/index.php?q=matthew8&niv=yes

Matthew 8: 11-12 is not in this online NIV

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%208&version=NIV

These verses are not in this Online NIV either. The text jumps from Matthew 8: 10 to Matthew 8: 13.

The NIV is translated to a great extent out of the Westcott-Hort Greek text of 1881. Matthew 8: 11-12 is in the Westcott-Greek text. But those who created the New International Version decided to leave it out. Here is the Westcott-Hort Greek. I have no idea how the Greek fonts will come out here.

Matthew 8: 11-12, John 1: 11 and Matthew 3: 10 are scriptures which cast doubt upon the starting foundation of dispensationalism, that ethnic Israel which rejected Christ is still God's chosen people and therefore Christians must acknowledge Jewish supremacy. I know that dispensatiomnalist theologians say that when the Jews rejected Christ, God then decided to create the "Church." But John 1: 11 - "He came unto his own, and his own received him not" - when combined with Matthew 8: 11-12 explains why those of ethnic Israel who rejected Christ are cast into outer darkness.

Matthew 3: 10 is a statement by John the Baptist saying the ax is laid to the root of the trees, which has to be understood in the context of what comes before that verse.

While the NIV has John 1: 11 and Matthew 3: 10, it omits Matthew 8: 11-12, which is a significant text saying ethnic Israel - those Jews who reject Christ - will be sent into outer darkness. Could there have been a dispensationalist influence upon the committee who created the New International Version?

I had a printed copy of the NIV at one time, but I don't know where it is. I checked two Online sites which have the NIV and is not in either of them.

I just looked again on http://www.biblica.com/bible/verse/index.php?q=matthew8&niv=yes

For Matthew 8: 11-12 it says:

"10When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. 11I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

13Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go! It will be done just as you believed it would." And his servant was healed at that very hour.
