Acts and the Gift of the Holy Spirit:

In Jo 20:21 Jesus breathed on his disciples and said to receive the Holy Spirit, after that occasion he instructed to go into the City and wait.

Acts Ch 1:3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:

4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

If you will notice in all of the Gospels It was said of Jesus that he would Baptize believers with the Holy Spirit and Fire.

He had said to them in verse four of ch 1 wait for the promise of the father, which you have heard of me, we know he was talking of the Holy Spirit, or the baptism with the Holy Spirit.

Verse 8 ,notice he mentions it is the Holy Spirit, and he tell's them why, to receive power, that they may be a witness unto him.

The number in the upper room was 120, and they where all in one accord in prayer.

In Acts: 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

This is not the new birth they where already born again, but it is as it was in Jesus ministry an additional impartation of the Holy Spirit for power to be a witness unto Jesus.

The Spirit came upon not within

He came on all

As all received the Gift of the Holy spirit.

All spoke in tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 2:7 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

19 And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:

20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:

21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Peter tells us what the promise of the father is, The Holy Spirit, it is the will of the father the Holy Spirit is to be poured out on all .

Now many want to argue this is the Gift of tongues, this is not the Gift of tongues it is refereed to as the Gift of The holy Spirit and when they received him all spoke in other tongues, as they where filled.

When a believe receives the Holy Spirit as in acts ch 2:4, you can pray in tongues any time you want to.

We will go to acts 10:44 and in this context we see this happening to the gentile believers and notice what the apostles say about it.

Acts 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

The Holy Spirit again Fell on all of them.

They said this was the Gift of the Holy Spirit

Because they heard them speak with tongues.

In explaining the occasion to the Jewish brethren Peter Said:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.

16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

18 When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.

Again we see baptized with the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is again refereed to as the gift

Hi PJ,

I was taught all that in Pentecostal Bible College, let me show you why it is not biblical. Let's start with your John scripture. For clarity, all scripture will be NKJV. If you have a problem with it we can go to the Greek for accuracy.

Joh 20:22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.

Joh 20:23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

Joh 20:24 Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.

Now, if we look at the following scriptures we learn some important facts. First, Jesus was empowering them for a purpose. He was sending them out. Next we learn that it was not ALL the disciples who were there, but some of the 12.

Also, you give the impression that He gave them the Spirit and sent them straight to Jerusalem, this was not the case. It was some time later that He sent them.

How did Jesus deliver the instructions to wait in Jerusalem? Let's look at the scriptures again.

Act 1:2 until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen,

Act 1:3 to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

Act 1:4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me;

Act 1:5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."

Verses 2 and 3 make it very clear that this message was relayed by the Apostles to the gathered disciples, by the Holy Spirit. This confirms my statement that only the inner circle received the Spirit in John 20:22. Why were the rest to wait? So they, too, could receive the Spirit.

In Acts 2:2-4 we see the pouring out of the Spirit. Not on everyone, but the disciples only. The bible tells us there were devout men, Jews, there but they did not receive.

Let's go down to the speaking part now. Let's start by looking at the scriptures.

Act 2:5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.

Act 2:6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.

Act 2:7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans?

Act 2:8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?

Notice a few key things that are never talked about. The Bible NEVER says they spoke the languages of the various people around them....it says they HEARD their own language. If you know the whole bible, this makes sense.

At the tower of Babel, God took away the one language everyone spoke up until then. Remember, Adam and Eve didn't have to learn a language, it was just there, embedded in their DNA, if you will. God gave them different languages, I won't go into the why of it now, that is a different subject.

We know from Zeph. 3:9 that God will give it back at the second coming.

That language, which is still a part of us, was what was spoken at Pentecost.

Think of it this way, 120 disciples, speaking say 20 different languages all at once to a group of over 3,000 people. If you were lucky enough to be close to one of the 7 or 8 speaking your language, there were still 110 others talking at the same time in other languages. God is not the author of confusion.

Finally, let's deal with the Joel prophesy. Since you left out a bunch of it, like all Pentecostals do, I will post it all.

Act 2:17 'AND IT SHALL COME TO PASS IN THE LAST DAYS, SAYS GOD, THAT I WILL POUR OUT OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL FLESH; YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY, YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS, YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM DREAMS.

Act 2:18 AND ON MY MENSERVANTS AND ON MY MAIDSERVANTS I WILL POUR OUT MY SPIRIT IN THOSE DAYS; AND THEY SHALL PROPHESY.

Act 2:19 I WILL SHOW WONDERS IN HEAVEN ABOVE AND SIGNS IN THE EARTH BENEATH: BLOOD AND FIRE AND VAPOR OF SMOKE.

Act 2:20 THE SUN SHALL BE TURNED INTO DARKNESS, AND THE MOON INTO BLOOD, BEFORE THE COMING OF THE GREAT AND AWESOME DAY OF THE LORD.

Act 2:21 AND IT SHALL COME TO PASS THAT WHOEVER CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD SHALL BE SAVED.'

Well, we already know that the spirit did not get poured out on all flesh since the Jews didn't receive. The sun and moon seem to still be here as well. Huh? What happened was, God gave them a sign to help with ministering. A glimpse of what the fulfillment of that prophesy will be.

Blessings,

Leon

1Co 12:4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

1Co 12:5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.

1Co 12:6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.

1Co 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:

1Co 12:8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,

1Co 12:9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,

1Co 12:10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

1Co 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

Tongues is one of the manifestations of the Spirit. In other words, it is the Spirit and not the person doing the talking. Also notice verse 11 says the Spirit decides who gets what gift. Verse 7 says it is for the benefit of all. Does your praying in tongues benefit me?

Pentecost and the acceptance of the gentiles are the only places in the bible where gifts were given without the laying on of hands, and then the Apostles were the only ones who could do this.

Blessings,

Leon

Leon you added to the word again and tryed to bring your theory into, ignoring what was said, The promise was the Spirit, not tongues but when they received the Spirit, they spoke as the spirit gave them utterance

Jeus instruction was to those in the upper room 120 and the word says all received speaking of those in the upper room.

The promise was the Holy Spirit the word is very clear.

This is not the Gift of tongues no matter how you try to confuse it.

Concerning the three thousand you left them out the word did not.

I also posted on acts 10:34 and Peter also confirmed the account, and said they received The gift of the holy Spirit because they heard them Speak with tongues

In every instance in acts it is recorded the Spirit came upon them.

Acts 237 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

It is very clear the holy Spirit is for all, but you must receive him.

These disciples also had tongues of fire setting on their shoulders, when is the last time you saw that happen? PJ, your man made understanding is clouding your judgment.

Wow big subject. It is up to every man to believe it or reject it.Here is some of what I know God Bless and may God open our eyes to his wonderfull truth.Their is one gift given when a man believes(Romans 10:9&10) with nine manifestions(evidences, operations) of that spirit mistakenly called gifts, the only one that says it is a gift is gifts of healing. Many say distributing to each one individually as God wills(Sometimes it is hard for us to change our thinking from what we hold to be true)but that is untrue, its as the man wills or desires to operate the spirit within him.It is true that the spirit does the speaking(laylo)but it is up to us to believe to operate that spirit.Christ always required believing when he healed someone and when the person believed often times he said I will be thou whole.Operation of the manifestions.Silver and Gold have I none but such as I have give I thee in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazereth rize up and walk.Yes God has given such power unto men "for the works that I do(JC)shall you do also and greater works then these shall ye do because I go unto the Father,Christ isnt here to do the works of the Father he left that job to us to show the Glory of the Father to those who would Believe through the manifestions of the spirit that dwells in us when we believe.Oh that God would give such power unto men: "But grow in GRACE,and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be GLORY both now and forever.Amen.May God give us the understanding.

Kindman,

Do you realize what you just proclaimed here? First you said the Bible lied when Paul wrote this; 1Co 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

As WHO wills? Notice the capital "H" in He? That is to show it is a reference to God.

Then you stated that man controls God. This is what you said; its as the man wills or desires to operate the spirit within him. I am sorry but that is not only untrue, it is blasphemy. You should be careful with blasphemy where the Holy Spirit is concerned.

Wow! I have never seen such arrogance. Man controls God? Not even unbelievers have the gall to make that statement.

Leon the man did not say any such thing, man has to cooperate with the Holy Spirit.

The false sovereignty teaching will never fit into the word of God, the Holy Spirit is man's helper he is not his doer.

It always involves mans cooperation with the Spirit of God in the manifestations of the Spirit.

Do you not prove that by your responses to the word of God.

Leon is hard to be spiritual when you do not have the holy spirit.
