Acts chapter 2
Posted : 19 Jun, 2010 08:28 AM

Acts 2:2-3 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.

This happened on he day of Pentecost. Hebrew scholars believe Moses received the 10 Commandments on the day of Pentecost.

It is 50 days adter passover. It is interesting that God choses a jewish hoilday to act.

Since there was a Jewish Holiday about once or twice every month it is not so hard for that to happen, but it certainly should be expected to have some significance since SALVATION IS OF THE JEWS, but also thank God that we are not under the Laws of Israel. If we put ourselves under those laws then Christ is crucified in vain.

Even Peter did not any longer live under the Law, and he was Jewish, and the apostle to the Jews.

Thank God we are free from the Handwriting of Ordinances that was against now that we have come to Christ.

Good post Dennis, I see you're doing your studying.:applause:

The day of Pentecost was a very important time of celebration for the Jews, and for God to presence Himself in His fulness to His disciples and the people. God set this time of Jewish celebration on this day of theJewish feast, because He knew a large amount of Jews would be in the city celebrating, and this would be a perfect time to show Himself through His Holy Spirit and His works in the fulfilment of His promise as you will find in chapter 1:verse 8.

Dennis, As you have posted chapter 2:verses 2-3, this lets us see how God sent forth His Holy Spirit to His disciples to empower them with divine power for the work of the ministry. God got the disciples' attention in verse 2, while they were praying in His presence, which came as the mighty rushing wind, which Jesus speaks to us about the presence of God as being the wind, in John chapter 3.

The cloven(divided or different) tongues like as fire that sat upon the disciples, which is another sign of God's presence as being fire , which repersents God throughout the Bible (Ezekiel speaks about this in chapter 1) the fire(baptism of the Holy Spirit) empowered the disciples with the gifts needed for the ministry to speak in all the different languages of the people they would be ministering the gospel to throughout the region. This is called the baptism of the Holy Spirit wherein the Holy Spirt lives within the belivers and gives out spiritual gifts to all believers for the work of the ministry. And this baptism includes the filling and baptism with the fire of God.:glow:

Acts is a tough book, especially if you are trying to build a theology using it. That is why many denominations have such a hard time and seem a little off.

I was always taught, don't teach the Apostle's experiences, experience their teachings. They say that because the Apostles were learning themselves at that time. They had to learn to get by without Jesus there in the flesh. They made mistakes and missteps, just as you would expect.

Food for thought,

Leon
