Admin	That wonderfull name. Posted : 15 Jun, 2010 04:33 PM Yeshua is the Hebrew name for Jesus. Jesus is the Greek name for Yeshua. Now why did the English translators make a decsion to use Jesus and not the English word?????? Hmmmmmm Jesus in English is Joshua. I am guessing here but I assume they wanted to seperate Joshua and Jesus to prevent confusion. Any other ideas??? Dennis:peace: Post Reply

Yeshu'a is itself a contracted form of Yehoshu'a (see JOSHUA). Yeshua ben Yoseph, better known as Jesus Christ, was the central figure of the New Testament and the source of the Christian religion. The four Gospels state that he was the son of God and the Virgin Mary who fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies of the Messiah. It doesn't list a Greek translation in the name origin like it does for Jesus. Hmmm... The "Behind the Name" site I quoted from earlier says this about Joshua: JOSHUA Gender: Masculine Usage: English, Biblical Pronounced: JAH-shə-wə (English), JAW-shwə (English) [key] From the Hebrew name יְהוֹשֻׁעַ (Yehoshu'a) meaning "YAHWEH is salvation". Joshua was one of the twelve spies sent into Canaan by Moses in the Old Testament. After Moses died Joshua succeeded him as leader of the Israelites. As an English name, Joshua has been in use since the Protestant Reformation. � 1996-2010 Mike Campbell Notice that it does not list a Greek or Latin intermediary word/name at all. Hmmm... A dictionary that I looked at traces Jesus through Middle English from the Late Latin word Isus from the Greek word mentioned in my first post. For Joshua, it concurs with it being transalated through the Late Latin word Ioshua directly from the Hebrew (w/ no Greek intermediary). So, it looks like the names were "split" in translation between the Hebrew and Latin (assuming these websites are correct anyway! And people, including experts such as linguists and etymologists, disagree on word/name origins). Personally, I don't find anything unusual about this at all. I took an etymology course in college (Latin and Greek) and this type of thing is quite common. It's just part of language development... Post Reply
