Does the way we worship matter?

Gen. 4:3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.

4And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

5But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

6And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?

7If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

Jude I believe you will find an offering as an act of worship, for instance when Abraham went to worship with his son, the act of Worship was the willingnes to offer up his first born Son.

This is a foreshadow of Jesus.

Well...offering sacrifices was part of worship back then. Everything we do for God is worship...in my view anyway...I guess I see your point a little, but what is worship anyway? Praying? Singing? Reading you bible? Or is it just doing what God wants? If you don't do what God asks then it's not worship to Him, which is what I think that verse was saying. I mean....how do we worship God? By doing what He asks, right? It's not just a ceremonial "sitting in the pews". It's being obedient to His commands. That's how we show our allegiance, our respect, our love, and I think it's how we "worship".

I agree.

All my life should be worship to God. Every word, every thought, every breath, every move! Just doing His will and loving Him with all our hearts.

Well, technically, if one "worships" incorrectly, then it really isn't worship =) But, yes, it does matter!!

And certain offerings -- burnt, grain, and fellowship -- were for worship, among other things. Outside of Leviticus (in Joshua 22:27 and 2 Kings 17:36, to name a couple) offerings and sacrifices are referred to more broadly/generally as acts of worship.

I would think that anything we do/say/think that expresses our love, devotion, submission, and commitment to God and exalts Him could be classified as worship. I've heard also worship described as: he things we do that show what God is worth. Cain's "offering" was not an accepted act of worship because it glorified himself above God, in that he w/held the best from God and kept it for himself.

Here are some references that describe worship:

1 Chronicles 16:29/ "ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name. Bring an offering and come before him; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness."

Psalm 100:2/ "Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs."

John 4:24/ "'God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.'"

Romans 12:1/ "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship."

Hebrews 12:28-29/ "Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our 'God is a consuming fire.'"

From these references, I think we can conclude that (and this is certainly not an exhaustive list):

x Worship gives glory to God. It exalts Him and reflects His work in our work. It point to Him, not us.

x Worship involves coming before God, which I think means submitting to Him, seeking His will and His wisdom.

x We must worship with a glad heart.

x One form of worship is singing joyfully.

x True worship is consistent with God's character and spirit. It's about who He is, not who we are (or were).

x Submitting our bodies and the whole of ourselves to God, for His purposes and for His glory, is an act of worship.

x Worship stems from a thankful heart that recognizes God's provision and sovereignty and is focused on what the Lord has prepared for us.

x Worship should be done in reverence and awe.

x Worship is done because our "'God is a consuming fire,'" which I think refers to God's presence with the Israelites and His actions on their behalf. God is the One who sets us apart, who makes our way for us, and who keeps us. His presence is undeniable and is with us always. These reasons, among many others, make Him worthy of our worship.

That's my 2 cents =)
