When Jesus commanded us to, do this in remembrance of him. What did this really

mean? This was at the Passover meal before Jesus was arrested. To understand this better a

short history lesson is needed. A few years ago a Pastor of the church I attended started a

Passover meal. We went by Messianic Jewish customs; Jews that follow Christ. We added a

few new things every year to make it more real. This I found to a be fun and exciting meal. It

helped me to understand the gospel better. This is what the Passover meal really teaches us about Christ.

The lamb is chosen because it is the meat that God said to use, as the sacrifice for our

forgiveness of sins. There must be a mother and father that are the head of the meal. The

mother is to remove all leavening from the home, except a little bit. After the leavening has

been removed, the mother ask the children to search for leavening. Just a tad bit is hidden for

the children to find. This is so that the children can participate in the meal. At this time the tad

bit of leavening is also removed from the home. The unleavened bread called matzo is used in this meal.

The head mother lights the candles and says a prayer. Then the father fills every

bodies cups up with wine. The first glass of wine is for remembrance of the years of slavery in

Egypt at the hand of Pharaoh. The father washes his hands at this point, as a washing bowl is

at the table. The matzo bread is broken into three pieces, the center piece of bread is broken

again. Then half of the center piece is put with the other two pieces. The remaining part is

wrapped in white linen. At this point a story is told, it has several children in it. There is a

wise son, a wicked son, a simple son and a son who is to young to ask questions. The story

plays out then for all to watch. ( A Feast of Seasons, Margot Hodson )

Dennis Grime

The youngest child ask, Why is this night different from all other nights? On all other

nights we eat any kind of bread, but on this night we eat only unleavened bread. On all other

nights we eat ant kind of herbs, but this night only bitter herbs? Why do we dip the bitter

herbs twice? This is said at all Passover meals by the youngest child in the family. Shortly

afterwards the father passes out the bitter herbs to eat. This is done to remember the years of

bitterness. Now the meal is served to the family.

From the time of the first Passover meal to the modern age much has changed. The

cup of Elijah has been added after he went to heaven with out dying. This is done near the

end of the meal. The children are sent outside to look for Elijah; while the father hides the

piece of bread that he wrapped in white linen from the beginning of the meal. As the children

return they are told to look for the bread. The one that finds it gets a prize. Thus the cup of Elijah is drank to end the meal.

Why wrap the piece of broken bread in white linen? Why have three pieces of bread?

Why would the children look for Elijah? These are all questions that have to do with the order

of the meal. It is done in this order for a reason. The body of Christ was wrapped in linen

when he was buried in the tomb. The three pieces of bread are the Father, Son and Holy

Ghost. Elijah was a voice in the wilderness, John the Baptist was the forerunner to Christ and

has been called the voice in the wilderness. Messianic Jews who have accepted Christ

understand this meal. It teaches the life of Christ and reveals him to the Jewish people. Jesus

made it so simple that a child could understand. This meal takes about two hours to do. After

all the prayers and songs I learned a lot from my experience at my church. This was fun to watch and do it.
