Chapter 12 of Leviticus explains to us that the period of purification after the birth of a girl baby is double the time as the period following the birth of a boy baby.

Does anyone have an interesting theory as to WHY this may be? I can't think of any biological reason for the difference, so I suppose it is symbolic in some way of something. It would be really interesting to know what it's symbolic of.

(And, yes, I know we're no longer subject to following this regulation; I'm just curious.)

Well....can't really be sure because the bible doesn't say...but...it could be that a baby girl is more susceptible to infection because...*cough*...there's more...uh...anyway...I don't know. I'm sure there's a health reason behind it...and probably for the baby's protection...

Very interesting question. The verse states that the women is considered unclean for 7 days after the birth of a male child and 14 days after the birth of a female. I do not know the answer to this, but I wonder if it might be related to the practice that on the 8th day the boy is circumcised. Maybe the child being circumcised or entering into the covenant with God and His children, somehow transfers ritual purity to the mother. Again, I don't know. I just find the timing curious.
