I think they are separate parts although the words seem to be used interchangeably at times.

The Hebrew word nephesh means is often translated soul and means a breathing creature and abstractly, vitality also translated appetite, beast, body, breath, creature, lust, man, me, mind, mortality, one, own, person, pleasure. (Strongs H5315) In nearly every case I found in the KJV this is the word in the OT that is translated soul but is occasionally translated life. However the more common word for life is chay (pron. khah'ee)

The Hebrew word for spirit is rûach and it means wind and by resemblance spirit, but only of a rational being (including its expression and functions) (Strongs H7307)

in the Greek psuchē is translated as soul and spirit but speaks specifically of the conscious mind. (Strongs G5590) The word psuchō means to breathe. (Strongs 5594) This is different than pneuma which is translated spirit and means a current of air, that is, breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively a spirit, that is, (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc. (Strongs G4151)

It would appear that in the simplest terms the soul and spirit are distinguishable in that the soul is the person, creature, or the conscious and living, vital human or animal. The spirit however has more to with our rationality, mentality, or mind set. It is what separates us from the animals. Animals are not rational, logical thinkers but rather function on instinct only.

The Bible teaches that the un-born again have spirits that are dead Rom 5:21, Rom 7:5, 2Co 1:9 , 2Co 1:10 . Their mentality is that of a person living a life that will bring them to eternal death. But those who are born again have the Spirit of God and the mind of Christ and so they have eternal life. Joh 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

Since humans and animals have souls, that is a conscious vitality of life, but only humans have a spirit, a rational mentality, I would have to say that they are two different things.

We are born into sin and death and therefore our spirit takes us down path of death and destruction. Without the life of Christ breathing in us (theopneustos, breath/Spirit of God) we do not have the true understanding of life.

Just like god being 3 he made us three

1Thes 5:23

23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

(KJV)

I think that a man's body and spirit make up a soul.

Trinity thing might be a good example. Never thought about it like that. Maybe...

Body=Christ

Spirit=Holy Ghost

Soul=God

We were made in their image after all.
