Titus 1:16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny Him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate (worthless).

James 2:14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

17: Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

18: Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

21: Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

22: Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

23: And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

24: Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

Matt 25:41 Then shall He say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

42: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:

43: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

44: Then shall they also answer Him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

45: Then shall He answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

46: And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Rom 2:5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

6: Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

7: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:

8: But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

1Tim 6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;

18: That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;

19: Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

Act 5:32 And we are His witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey Him.

Heb 5:9 And being made perfect, He became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him;

Heb 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

If we are believers, we will want to obey the Lord, and not say we believe but have no evidence of that faith in our lives. Our walk MUST match our talk, or we are hypocrites and fooling ourselves. Even unbelievers notice whether we actually DO and LIVE what we believe.

Luke 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

1John 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.

4: He that saith, I know Him, and keepeth not His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

Matt 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Faith and Works go hand in hand.

Works do not "purchase" anything, they are a manisfestation of Faith... a natural consequence of Faith and a very Good indicator of how ALive your faith is.

depending on what kind of works your talking about.

we have to activate our faith with works like praying for the sick or stepping out to minister to someone at the store. you can have faith that they will one day be saved or you can put action to your faith and be the person that brings the gospel. Faith without works is dead =)

there are also works that people do to get noticed and those type of works are not unto the Lord. Those are works of the flesh and God doesnt bless that.

Look at the pharissees...

dear folks,

acts 26:20 but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.

As a Baptist, I was taught that works without faith will not get you into heaven:

Isaiah 64:6 But we are all an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags......

As you point out in James 2:14( What does it profit my brethren, though a man says he has faith, and have not works......) works and faith go hand in hand- it's pretty difficult to claim to be a Christian and not do the work of Christ

Works don't save yourself, but withholding good works, or claiming they are unnecessary is a selfish spiritual life. We should be wanting to share all the good works that have been done for us, not to save ourselves, but to show mercy because we have been shown mercy. Forgive because we are forgiven, and so on. Works should be a natural reaction from a saved and converted heart, and in many cases works are partly responsible for planting a seed in another human soul. Every Christian's life is a witness.

Salvation is by faith through God's grace via the finished work of Calvary. However, once you are a believer, God expects certain things of you. Scripture says faith without works is dead.Your faith is demonstrated through your works. Some religions get it backwards and put the cart before the horse and think that works come first then salvation when in reality according to scripture, it is the other way around.

Hope that was clear. Clear as mud? lol

Hi Jennifer,

You said: "there are also works that people do to get noticed and those type of works are not unto the Lord. Those are works of the flesh and God doesnt bless that."

Let's examine something Jesus said.

Mat 5:14 "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.

15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. NKJV

I think what you might be saying is concerning the "Motivation" as to why someone wants their good works noticed. Is it for their glory or for God's? Is that right?

Blessings!

Hi Sundra,

You said " Salvation is by faith through God's grace via the finished work of Calvary."

Actually Sundra we are saved BY Grace through faith. You had it backwards. But i do want to point something out here. We are not saved through Faith ALONE. That is a teaching that has permeated Christianity due to Calvinism and it is not sound. Works is not involved but Faith... "ALONE" is not in scripture. Remember when we examine scriptures, not one verse was ever intended to be a theological treatise on the issue of Salvation. But that is for another thread. lol

Blessings!
