Un-Biblical Christian saying?

I was wondering how many little saying we could come-up with that are said/believed but aren't scriptural. In fact some on down-right contrary to the Word.

Example 1: "God helps those who help themselves"

I believe this is contrary to scripture because of HIS desire for us to trust, look to, and rely on HIM. This saying encourages a reliance on our own strength and resourcefulness. It leads to an assertiveness which would put us ahead of God's schedule.

God's character is one of mercy. I believe it is when a person or nation comes to the end of self, pride, independence, sin, ...and cries out, "Have mercy on me" or "Abba, father" or "save us from our enemies"

Then God helps the helpless, widows, orphans, humble, lost, sick, wretched, sinner, and saint.

So, what do you think? Do you have a saying just burning for exposure?

Love the WORD,

Susan

May the peace of the LORD be with you, SuzieQ.

I think I have one of those un-biblical sayings; It is believed we cannot lose our salvation. But in the gospels we are commanded to forgive others so we can be forgiven. Did we ever acquire our salvation if we haven't forgiven all that needed our forgiveness in the first place?

Deborah,

Good name! Great name!

I think it is unbiblical when people use the expression to get the log out of their eye and stop picking out the splinter in theirs! What I mean is, they can't see themselves for what they are. They find every reason in the world why they are the victim of others, when in fact, they are the perpertrators! People use scripture to twist things all the time, so God will have to judge and deal with it, and He will!

:rolleyes: Be covered in His precious blood!

Can we picture Benjamin Franklin printing these daily quips. Those and other sayings were originated by him before being an emissary for this young country.

It is good to have words to live by. The book of Proverbs are full of them. The are short and to the point.

Proverbs 15 (Contemporary English Version)

1 A kind answer soothes angry feelings,

but harsh words stir them up.

2 Words of wisdom come from the wise,

but fools speak foolishness.

6 Good people become wealthy,

but those who are evil will lose what they have.

7 Words of wisdom make good sense;

the thoughts of a fool make no sense at all

5 The poor have a hard life,

but being content is as good as an endless feast.

16 It's better to obey the LORD and have only a little,

than to be very rich and terribly confused.

....and the list goes on (ever wonder where they get those sayings for fortune cookies?).

Praise the word of God.

"Once saved, always save" is the little cliche' they quote.

When I was a young Christian, I looked everywhere for that one. Couldn't find it! I did find Paul concerned about being disqualified after preaching to others. Another verse that shook me up was to work out my salvation in fear and trembling. Then Revelation the Lukewarm church gets spit out. Finally, there's that group of "Lord, lord did we not"ers Which Jesus says He never knew, and sends them to the lake of fire.

Right on Strawberri!

Wouldn't you think holiness or righteousness rates next to godliness before cleanliness. Sounds like a mom trying to get her children to do chores?

I love the WORD's of God. Years ago the Lord spoke to me to stop using all those (good but not God) sayings of my mom's to deal with my children but to speak to them from Proverbs and the New Testement, especially.

OFF TOPIC: Could somebody tell me how to add some of these cute smiles? Thanx!

Into HIS WORD,

Susan

If we stick to Proverbs we'll be doing fine. Especially if we can be quoted saying it came from the Bible. There are alot of wonderful sayings and thoughts out there. I use them all the time but I do think we need to give credit where credit is due and not infer it's from the Bible....Good topic!:applause:

Hey gang,

I don't know if anyone else has heard this one or not. My step-dad (passed away now) was a heavy drinker his entire life. Over the years, he had many accidents---- wrecked his pick-up truck on numerous occasions(thankfully no one was ever hurt); twice he flipped his 4- wheeler;fallen off horses; drove his tractor into the pond;and the list goes on!

After each event, I can't remember my mama ever NOT telling me,"You know, they say God takes care of drunks and babies." Don't know who "they" are!

I do know we serve a very Merciful and Loving God.

God Bless You All;

Deborah

Hi Susan,

I got one that will shock some.

"The lion will lay with the lamb".

That is not in the bible by the way. It is a man made saying.

For those who think it's in the bible please show us the passage.

Grace to you!

In Christ,

Walter

Here is the passage it is "suppose" to come from.

Isa 11:6 "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, The leopard shall lie down with the young goat, The calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little child shall lead them.NKJV

"fatling" is cattle, not sheep, lambs or goats.

So as we can see, many Christians are just parrotting something they heard.

Blessings!

Walter

Walter,

Isaiah 65:25 "The wolf and the lamb shall feed together,

The lion shall eat straw like the ox..."

Isaiah 11: 6-9

The wolf shall live with the lamb,

the leopard shall lie down with the kid,

the calf and the lion and the fatling together,

and a little child shall lead them.

The cow and the bear shall graze,

their young shall lie down together;

and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp,

and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adders den.

They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain;

for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord

as the waters cover the sea.

This is close to them lying down. Perhaps we have been condensing it!

Thanks for the challenge and trip to the "Strong's Concordance"/copy&Paste!!! :bouncy:
