1Jn 5:6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.

1Jn 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

1Jn 5:8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one

I'm hoping for some help in what is meant that Jesus came by "water and blood", whether it relates to baptism and Christ's sacrifice? What is there that I'm not understanding please? Thanks...Jim

Jesus came by water and by blood:

By water:

I believe that it's the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan river. As Jesus replied in Matthew 3:15 " Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all the righteousness." Then John consented.

By blood:

Galatians 3:14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the gentiles through Jesus Christ, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

Luke 24: 44 He said to them " This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.

I hope this helps brother jjarr. Happy New year to you!!! :purpleangel:

Jesus, already the Messiah, was immersed in the Jordan which symbolized His death and resurection.

Romans 6:3-6

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? [4] Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. [5] For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: [6] Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

The reference to blood is refering to His death on the cross.

Romans 3:25

Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

Ahh good, thank you Ida and Rapio... the only references my Bilble gave to these verses was John 14 vs. 17, John 15 vs. 26 speaking on the Holy Spirit. Any suggestions from anyone on a good or preferred reference/study Bible with some commentaries too?

thanks again and happy new year!

Believe it or not reference bibles aren't the prefered way to study. They often lead you to the wrong verses and can mess up your theology in a bad way. My preference is Jewish commentary books. Google it and see what you find. You can find books on Torah, the Tenack and New testament.
