Are we conscious in heaven when we die? Can we watch from heaven and interact/pray for/help the people that are still on earth? I know that some humans have been resurrected/translated and taken to heaven...but as a general rule...are we all given eternal life when we die or does Jesus bring His reward with Him when He comes again?
1 Thessalonians 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.
14For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
15For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
16For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Luke gives an account in 16:20-31 which seems to suggest that we are conscious and aware of our surroundings when we die. I think those verses might also answer your question as to whether we can continue to help people that are still on earth once we die.
It is my belief that when one physically dies and is in Christ, he goes to be with Him in heaven. John saw "souls" under the altar in Heaven [Rev 6:9] Paul tells us that to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord [2 Cor 5:8]. The resurrection is the transition from a dead body to a changed immortal body.
All believers are given eternal life from the moment we accept Christ' sacrifice and forgiveness of sin. We are no longer condemned [John 3:18]. Hope that helps.

For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. I honestly don't know absolutely, but it seems like the weight of scripture at least supports an unconscious state after death until the second return of Christ. There are some in heaven, like Enoch, Elijah, and Moses are the only ones I know of for sure. There were many resurrected at the resurrection of Jesus. But I believe as a whole...most of God's followers are resting in the grave. The bible even alludes that the wicked are "reserved until the day of judgment". Now I know there are several verses that seem to say the opposite...but when there are that many that say "sleep", I believe the weight of scripture interprets scripture. You don't take 3 verses and interpret all the rest of the bible with those three. You take the 50 verses and interpret the three. Since the bible does not contradict itself, there must be another explanation for the others....don't ask me what it is though.
