Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is heaven.

(Matthew 5:16 NASB)

Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.

(Matthew 6:1 NASB)

The NIV translation is quite similar.

At a glance, these scriptures would appear to cancel each other out.

Part 1: Read through these 3 times, and tell me what they say to you.

Part 2: Seek out proper context, and tell me your interpretation of these bible verses.

The first is asking for an involuntary result of living a christian life, to have people attracted to your lifestyle because they can see God working in your life. The second is warning against "showing off" your righteousness to receive praise from men.

Mark is correct, it is all in motivation, one glorifies God the other glorifies self. I don't see that one cancels the other at all, it is no different than works are like dirty rags on the floor, while faith without works is dead. When you want to be noticed, it is the wrong motivation. When you become an instrument in the hands of the Lord, serving where there is no glory, being that anonymous angel that made a difference and no one needs to know about, walking away from the spotlight, knowing that is going to touch someone and bring them closer to God, these are the things that are different Will.

When you are the last person to sit down and eat the left overs at a church dinner, after serving everyone else and no one has noticed, that is being the hands and feet of the Lord. Bringing the food that feeds people between services, you know, the goodies that everyone takes for granted like it just appeared. That is the magic and the glory when it looks like the Lord provided, for He did, through you, but if we are quick to say "I did that" then you take His glory for your own.

That is the difference, and when you come to understand that you don't work through the Lord, but the Lord works through you, then you begin to understand how simple that is Will, it is not the least bit confusing, it is all in the motive.

I know God's Word doesn't "contradict" itself, that it never returns void, is the seed, is the truth, is the light, and the power we need.....but I was hoping that anyone would give a more detailed response for the proper context. It's akward wording for the scriptures considering how close they appear in the bible. A non-Christian would be quick to point that out unless the time was given to really see and understand.

I'd love to hear additional clarity from a contextual point of view. Thanks again!

Guess I 'm too simple to get what you are saying Will, cuz I think it's just that simple, I don't see any confusion in it at all. I fail to see the complexity of what you are saying so I guess I will let someone more adept address where you are going with this, for I am perplexed that a Christian would not be able to clearly see it.

Yeah, not sure what you mean either...it seems clear to me. I wouldn't know how to explain it any better though. Maybe if I use more words:goofball:. There is the natural "shining of light" that comes from when you are serving God, doing the only things you know that He always wants you to do...LOVE and OBEY Him. Has nothing to do with showing off, or earning anything. You do it because of the immeasurable love and sacrifice He has given you. The side effect of these "good works" is that people see the love of God, and the love you have for God...which causes them to long for a valuable, eternal relationship with their Creator and Savior. "Good works" are only a side effect of love and faith, but if you do not have these good works then your faith is useless. You only care about saving yourself, and that is not the love of God. So then you have dead faith. A person with dead faith is an unfaithful servant that buries his love in the ground. One that receives great mercy and gives none. A person with dead faith will not be in the kingdom.

The other kind of "works" is where you try to pay the debt...which is impossible. Usually the kind of people that think they're good enough to pay the debt, or that they are "extra special" enough to receive salvation...are the same ones that want everyone to see they are good/special enough. A proud pharisee. Someone that thinks they have earned salvation. Someone that thinks they are better then someone else in some way.

Well said Yall, its purty simple black an white.

ET - if you know the answer to your question, that the word does not contridict then why do you question ? To question GOD's word is to question His Authority in His word. If you are possibly questioning Man's translation of the word or possibly seeking understanding of the verse...well then, might I suggest you ask the Holy Spirit to clarify...after all the Holy Spirit is the Helper...Have a Blessed day and Blessings to all...xo

If God were to give you the Grace that led you to lift weights so as to develop your body and if you did this diligently and over time ended up with a very strong well developed bodythis would be the same as if God had built you up Spiritually through Grace.

Now if you went out and helped your family or friends or the community and everyone was saying how very nice of you and what has caused this change in you that is being the LightHouse that the first piece of Scripture speaks of.

Butif instead you take that body that Gods Graces has helped you to develop and parade around with no shirt on (just to show off that body and garner attention) then you are acting as the second piece of Scripture speaks about.

Two different Concepts..one is for God! The other is for self!

Selflessselfish Givegivegive! Gimmegimmegimme!

YouYouYouall MeMeMe!

If there are any questions...I'll be in the weight room.
