I was reading in Proverbs this morning, and verse 4 says: "A haughty look, a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked are sin." At first I was like "Ok, pretty self-expanatory" and went on to the next verse. But I have been thinking about that verse all day. Maybe I just don't understand what pride is. Is it wrong to be proud of someone? I can't think of any other way to describe that feeling though. I can say that I am "happy" for someone, but it doesn't completely express the feeling. You say you are happy for someone when something good happens like the person just got engaged or something. I don't know, I am just trying to process this.

Thoughts?

Katie,

In my opinion it is not wrong to be proud of someone or yourself. The danger is in letting it go too far.

The very first sin in God's creation was Pride! Pride has been the downfall of people - families - Nations.

When you become too prideful you start to believe that you do not need God. Everything is going just find because of what you (the wonderful creature you are) has accomplished.

It is only when we are in pain or in need of comfort that some of us turn our eyes to Heaven. You should be proud of who you are, of the things you hold dear. Just never forget where all the good you do actually comes from.

Peace

dear katie, we have nothing to be proud of within ourselves.. anything good we got came from GOD.. whether it be our looks, nice clothes, nice home, money, jobs etc etc..

i do believe the verses speak more to self pride .. how we can think we are it and that weve got it goin on..we are summin else somehow better than others..

the LORD does have a way of humblin folks.. its usually not too good to be on the recievein end of it either .. hehe

I'm fixing to have to go to work, so I can't give a HUGE response. I'll tell you what my study Bible says in the sidebar, though.

"Haughty eyes and a proud heart, the lamp of the wicked, are sin!"

"What is the 'lamp of the wicked'? (21:4) People in this period used a small, palm-size bowl with oil and a wick to provide light. Here it is used as sort of a reversed metaphor: light typically pictures inspiration or godly guidance. The wicked, by contrast, look to their own pride for guidance."

Hope this helps a little.

I think it is ok to be proud of people...maybe even proud of some accomplishments...but you have to be very careful that you don't start to think you're better then every one else. Thats what the bad pride is...to think you deserve special treatment over someone else, when in reality...you're the servant. Pride was in play at the last supper. But I do think there is a "pride" that is good. Paul talks about boasting in the new believers, but not of himself.

Word studies can be helpful. The word for pride means

broad, wide. And is used 21 times in the Old Testament. But only three time is it translated as pride. You can see it for yourself.

Go to the Blue letter bible web page search on your verse

(Proverbs 21:4) and then click the concordance C button to the left. It is right above the V button for versions. Once in the concordance click the # for the word or phrase you want (pride) and it will give the definition, how it is used and the root word it came from. Each word in the Bible has been assigned a standardized number to aid study and the dictionary.

But, "Is it wrong to be proud of someone?"

I'd say no, unless it makes you broad & wide in the head.

Hi, this is my first post in the forums.

This question struck a chord with me. I'm currently doing a study of Isaiah. So far, through chapter 23, every nation that has been slated for destruction has been guilty of the sin of pride. God is telling the nation of Israel, through Isaiah not to think so highly of themselves that they or others can help them. Their reliance must be on God. You can do nothing without God. Isaiah 10:5-15 gives a great example.

To the prior poster: Blue Letter Bible is a fantastic resource for word studies, as is Precept Austin.
