But they did not receive Him, because He was traveling toward Jerusalem. When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, ‘Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?’ But He turned and rebuked them, and said, ‘You do not know what kind of spirit you are of; for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.’ And they went on to another village” (Luke 9:51-56 NASV) This is perhaps why he gave them the name sons of thunder James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James, to whom He gave the name Boanerges, that is, ‘Sons of Thunder’” (Mark 3:14-17) Through the influence of Christ, two sons of thunder learned to have a different spirit: a “spirit of faith” (2 Corinthians 4:13), “a spirit of gentleness” (Galatians 6:1), a “spirit of wisdom” (Ephesians 1:17), “a gentle and quiet spirit” (1 Peter 3:4). Following their example, let us learn to have “the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16): a spirit of faith, gentleness, wisdom and love. Amen Post Reply

He came to sacrifice himself for the sins of men. Then disciples thought they were asking the right thing. After all, Elijah brought fire down from heaven and destroyed men sent from wicked King Ahaziah 2 Kings 1:10 when they came to arrest Elijah. Wicked King Ahaziah, provoked God’s anger by sending men to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, to ask, “whether I (the King), will recover from this injury.” But one day, Jesus will come with a sword to destroy but that wasn’t his purpose at the time.
