Mark 16:16 and Baptism

Hi Everyone,

Another passage that deals with the issue of water Baptism is found in Mark16:16. It is amazing how many will not accept the pure clear teaching of Christ our Lord. They will ignore the simple GRAMMAR and try to twist this passage.

Mark 16: 16 "He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe[disbelieves] will be condemned. NKJV

Jesus made a positive statement by giving us assurance of our salvation in that we are saved if we first.....believe, which means have faith and second, that we are BAPTIZED. Again we see TWO elements listed and one of them is water Baptism. By Jesus using the conjunctive word "AND" (kai in Greek) clearly links baptism and faith as two necessary elements. There is no escaping the Greek grammar here nor the context. The meaning is plain and in fact this one verse does in fact settle the issue of water Baptism.

The word Baptized here means this:

G907 baptizō pronounced bap-tid'-zo

From a derivative of G911; to make whelmed (that is, fully wet); used only (in the New Testament) of ceremonial ablution, especially (technically) of the ordinance of Christian baptism: - baptist, baptize, wash.

Now there are a few who will try and use the second part of the verse to override the first part. "but he who does not believe will be condemned.

They will say that since Jesus did not say he who is not baptized will be condemned or some similar wording implies that baptism is not necessary. That argument is simply not logical and is a violation of Hermeneutics. Who would want to get baptized if they didn't believe to begin with? The words Jesus used ..."does not believe" means "Disbelieved...someone who heard the Gospel and then rejected it. Who would go and line up to be baptized after they rejected the Gospel?

So why would Jesus COMMAND something that He would think was not necessary? Why did Jesus selectively use the grammar He did? Was Jesus in error? I don't think so! I choose to believe in what the very Son of God, the King of Kings, my Lord and Savior says!

Blessings!

Walter
