THE ROLE OF GOD'S LAW IN RIGHTEOUSNESS BY FAITH (1)

By A.T. Jones, (1893)

Please read the whole page to get the full understanding of this important message, as the last section of this page gives the answer as to the role of God's law, the ten commandments in the righteousness by faith and third angel's message.

The following is a sermon delivery by A.T.Jones, based on the third angel message, and deals with what place the law of God, the ten commandments, has in the righteousness by faith and third angel message. This sermon was recorded in the 1893 General Conference Bulletin, a copy of which you can get on our 'books' page here: 1983 General Conference Bulletin. Original document: (Ask Pipiripi)

"Let us begin with the fifth chapter of Romans, twentieth verse. The real point, or we might say, one of the main points of study tonight is to see what place is the law of God occupies in the subject of righteousness by faith."

"Moreover the law entered, that the offense might abound." In other words, Roman 3:20, the last words ... "by the law is the knowledge of sin." What was the law given for on tables of stone--the first purpose of its given? [Congregation: "To show us what sin is."] To make sin abound; to give the knowledge of sin. So, "The law entered that the offense might abound"; that sin might appear; that it might appear as it is. Paul, speaking in the 7th chapter of Romans, says how it appears to him, 12th and 13th verse:"

"Wherefore the law is holy and the commandment holy and just and good. Was then that which is good made death onto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeded sinful." Then to make sin abound and make it appear as it is exceeding sinful--that is the first object of the giving of the law, isn't it?"

NOTE: (FROM MY TEACHING): Did you see that it is not the ten commandments that is made death unto us, but the SIN that the law exposes in us works death in us. The law is that 'good' and 'righteous' thing which SHOWS us sin and it is that sin which brings about death.

"Now let us read right on in Romans 5: "Moreover the law entered, that the offense might bound, but where sin abounded, grace did much more abound." Then did the law come alone, making sin to appear alone, and that alone? [Congregation: "No."] it is simply the means to another end--the means to an end by which to attain another object beyond the knowledge of sin. Is that so? [Congregation: "Yes."] So then, where sin abounds--where is it that grace abounds. [Congregation: "in the same place."] Right there? [Congregation: "Yes".] But does it read that way, where sin "abounded grace abounded"? [Congregation: "'No, much more'".] That would be pretty good wouldn't it, if it was only where sin abounds there grace abounds. That would be pretty good, but that is not the way the Lord does things, you know. He does things absolutely well--entirely good, just as good as God could do."

Bible legalism, Christian legalism

The word “legalism” does not occur in the Bible. It is a term Christians use to describe a doctrinal position emphasizing a system of rules and regulations for achieving both salvation and spiritual growth. Legalists believe in and demand a strict literal adherence to rules and regulations. Doctrinally, it is a position essentially opposed to grace. Those who hold a legalistic position often fail to see the real purpose for law, especially the purpose of the Old Testament law of Moses, which is to be our “schoolmaster” or “tutor” to bring us to Christ (Galatians 3:24).

Even true believers can be legalistic. We are instructed, rather, to be gracious to one another: “Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters” (Romans 14:1). Sadly, there are those who feel so strongly about non-essential doctrines that they will run others out of their fellowship, not even allowing the expression of another viewpoint. That, too, is legalism. Many legalistic believers today make the error of demanding unqualified adherence to their own biblical interpretations and even to their own traditions. For example, there are those who feel that to be spiritual one must simply avoid tobacco, alcoholic beverages, dancing, movies, etc. The truth is that avoiding these things is no guarantee of spirituality.

The apostle Paul warns us of legalism in Colossians 2:20-23: “Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: ‘Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!’? These are all destined to perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.” Legalists may appear to be righteous and spiritual, but legalism ultimately fails to accomplish God’s purposes because it is an outward performance instead of an inward change.

To avoid falling into the trap of legalism, we can start by holding fast to the words of the apostle John, “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (John 1:17) and remembering to be gracious, especially to our brothers and sisters in Christ. “Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand” (Romans 14:4). “You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat” (Romans 14:10).

A word of caution is necessary here. While we need to be gracious to one another and tolerant of disagreement over disputable matters, we cannot accept heresy. We are exhorted to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints (Jude 3). If we remember these guidelines and apply them in love and mercy, we will be safe from both legalism and heresy. “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1).

The Holy Spirit is a part of the Godhead and has spoken to men, to Jesus and to God the Father.

I’ve already shown you that several times but because Ellen White has stolen your head, heart and soul you can’t hear Bible truth, you can do and believe only what Ellen White tells you .

WATCH OUT FOR FALSE PROPHETS like Pirpiripi and the TeddyBug who teach Sabbath keeping and other false like sinless perfectionism teachings that are contrary to scripture

2 Corinthian 11:3

I am afraid, however, that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may be led astray from your simple and pure devotion to Christ. 4For if someone comes and proclaims a Jesus other than the One we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit than the One you received, or a different gospel than the one you accepted, you put up with it way too easily.

13For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their actions.
