The False Doctrine of Perfectionism

By Monergism

1 John 1:8-10

Introductory Thoughts

· The problem of balance in this doctrinal area

· Extreme Views

Ø First Extreme View: No holiness, or, “Holiness, what is that?” Many in the churches believe that a consistent Christian lifestyle is optional. They believe in conduct-neutral Christianity.

Ø Second extreme view—Perfection (much rarer today)

· The True Doctrine—God is Light è 1 John 1:5

· The First False Doctrine we looked at—Antinomianism è1:6-7. Antinomianism is against all law, is against any ethical requirement for the Christian. It teaches that the evidence of a person’s life is irrelevant.

· The True Alternative Doctrine—1:7

· Now we deal with the false doctrine of perfectionism.

1. First Form of Perfectionism—claiming to have no tendency to sin è John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

a. The Language

(1) In the Greek, this is what is called a Subjunctive sentence, a third class condition—it is an “if, then” statement.

(2) “If we up and say…”, this is the Greek aorist tense—if we have up and said at any time...

(3) “that we do not have sin” (present tense).

(4) What he is saying is: “If we up and say that we live continually in such a way that we have no principle of sin in us....”

(5) Then...We are leading ourselves astray, and The Truth is not in us

b. Extreme views in this area historically

(1) Gnostics—the first cult

(a)Some denied that believers had any principle if sin, therefore, no matter what they did, it could not be considered sin—they actually used this kind of perfectionism as an excuse to sin!

(b) Others taught that a spiritual believer had no sin in their life, so they could live to perfection

(2) Other perfectionists since then have taught that by an act of sanctifying grace, the tendency to sin can be taken away from us in this life.

(3) In contrast to the perfectionist view is the The Carnal Christian Theory, which says that one can live totally in sin, fully surrendered to it, and still be considered a Christian

(4) All of these views are heresy—they are out of balance.

c. The balanced Biblical view is: when we become Christians......

(1) We receive a new nature—2 Cor 5:17

(2) The born again Christian will not practice sin as a style of life.

1 John 2:29 "If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him."

1 John 3:9 "No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God."

(3) The old man can be reckoned as dead, Sin no longer has the power to dominate us—Rom 6:1-15. Therefore, we should be growing in grace—2 Pet 3:18, progressing in holiness.

(4) This progression in holiness is not optional, it is the normal Christian life. To say that a progression in holiness is OPTIONAL is to state a heresy.

(5) Having said that, because we are still in flesh, we still must struggle against sin, even as we grow in Grace and holiness.

(a)By flesh, we don’t mean the body only, but the mind and soul, our total humanness.

(b) Systematic theologians like to draw very distinct lines on this question, but the Bible does not tell us where our humanity begins and ends and where the new man is.

(c) Our mind and body together remember the pleasures and ways of sin, and this must be put to death daily.

(d) As long as we live with our humanness (which is as long as we are alive) we are in danger of sinning, and must constantly be on our guard to fight against it, and fight against it we must and will

d. But to say that we have no sin, that we are beyond sin, is a heresy

è If a person believes in this kind of perfectionism, this is self deception èThis amounts to NO TRUTH

* (skip verse 9 monentarily, we will come back to it)

2. The Second form of perfectionism—claiming to be sinless in practice è 1 John 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

a. Language

(1) “If”—again, a third class condition sentence

(2) We say—aorist—if we at any time have said

(3) We have not sinned—perfect tense—have not sinned throughout the past.

(4) “...we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us....” This is all in the present tense—if we say that we have not been sinners in practice, we are continually making Him a liar and His word is continually not in us.

b. Perfectionists say that a second work of Grace can “fully sanctify” a person so that they are totally above sin, and they will claim that they live above sin. This is a false doctrine.

(1) Sinless perfection is our goal—but we will never reach that level of holiness in this life

(2) To claim perfection in our lives makes God a liar! Rom 3:9-12, 23, Eph 2:1-3

3. The Remedy for both heresies in chapter 1—the balanced Christian life—1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

a. Language—

(1) Again, a subjunctive sentence, conditional

(2) “...If we confess...” is present tense—if we go on confessing...

(a) The word for confess, ¿ìïëïã§ìåí , means to agree totally with, and to identify with.

(b) When we truly confess, we are saying something about us, and we are saying something about Him.

(c)Rom 10:9-10—when we confess Christ, we confess His Lordship

(d) When we confess that He is our Savior, we are confessing that we need a Savior, that we are sinners.

(e) And this is in the present tense! Our confession is perpetual and constant—we always say to our Father, “God be merciful to me a sinner.”

(3) So, the remedy for the first type of perfectionism-- perpetual repentance. If we are continually confessing to Him, we will not get the idea that we are perfect!

b. “...He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins...”

(1) Language—“...is...” è present tense—continual. Jesus is always faithful and always just.

(2) If we confess Him and His Lordship in our lives èHe is faithful and just to forgive us...What does that mean?

(a) He is faithful

(b) He is just—because the price of redemption has been paid, and because of the propitiation through faith in His blood, God is just and righteous to forgive us—See Romans 3:25-31

(c)To forgive—aorist—we confess continually, the the forgiveness of sins is something that takes place once. When He is our Father, the forgiveness of sins has happened, and God will no longer impute sin to our account—Rom 4:6-8. The sins that a believer commits are sins, but the legal status of the believer is that sins are now a family matter between Father and Son—you can lose fellowship, but never relationship.

(d) “...And to cleanse us from all unrighteousness...”—“...cleanse...” is aorist, so this is again talking about the great transaction that occured at our salvation.

(e) So, here is a strange thing:

(i) Our confession is continual

(ii) Our forgiveness from sin is granted once.

(iii) But back in 1:7, the cleansing was continual—the point is that we are cleansed once from the guilt of sin, then we are cleansed continually from the pollution of sin in our lives, and one day we will be cleansed from the very presence of sin.

And here folks is supposedly the case for the unfit prosecution to be able to give the jury written heresay because he is incompetent but the judge dismissed it as he stated prosecutor David needed to present the evidence in court in his own words to the jury!

Court adjourned for now until prosecutor David is able to do his job in presenting to the jury his charges against defendant!

Hugs,

When was the last time you pkst anything of what you believe, maybe you are ashamed of your beliefs.

All i see you doing is criticizing others, and saying that you OWN them.

Hugs, Adam is not ashamed to show his false teachings ,along with the fact that he does not understand how to read the Scriptures, as he never includes the context of the verses he posts.

Hugs, you remind me of the Pharisees, they followed the Messiah, criticized Him, yet never spoke about what they believed the Word of GOD Almighty had to say.

Teddythugs, did you bother to read the entire article. I’m will to wager the language is beyond your foolishness threshold.

Teddythugs, the proof is in the pudding.

The English translations do not support you or your own false prophet Adam’s silly false doctrine of sinless perfectionism. The original languages prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that sinless perfectionism is the heresy it was shown to be years ago.

Teddythugs, it’s one thing to be foolish because you can’t help it but it’s entirely something else to be stupid because you choose to be.

Teddythugs, you must be able >>qualify<< in order to sit on a jury.

Based on your extremely pathological posts, it’s doubtful you could get past the initial interview.

For someone to qualify as a juror, they must be able to clearly demonstrate a fair sense of unbiased neutrality. Flat Teddy, you’ve already lost.

Lots of vain talk from the article, worhtless and predicted:

2 Peter 2:18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.

Get down to the actual words.

Once cleansed from all sin, do we grow to learn ho to not sin, or we learn this immediately?

1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

The article has nothing of the right and wrong ways of Christ in context, here a verse and there, that's it, because you want to darken the light.

These three verses included..

1 John 2:29 is included, mentioning about doing righteousness, but fails to explain what that is.

The circumcision of Christ onto us, the new covenant Gods writes in us, His righteousness of the law, is when anyone born of God does righteousness, otherwise care to explain how you can do any righteousness ?

Romans 2:26 Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?

1 John 3:9 is included, about not continuing to sin, again all the article had to do was continue down to 1 John 3:10, which again shows how the ones who do not do righteousness, who hate their brother, and do not love their brother, do unrighteousness, and this highlights exactly who is not of God..

1 John 3:10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

The last mention of scripture in the article has Romans 6:1-15. Nothing talked about these verses in the article, or of any articles, it is biased abut growing and against being perfect. Mans court is corrupt, the lawyers are the most deceiving on earth spinning and accusing and without honesty.

But all we have to do is again see one verse from what this article listed, to reveal yet again the very same description.

1. The ones who do righteousness are born of God, they cannot do any righteousness without being born of God, a person can only do unrighteousness until born of God.

2. Anyone enabled by Christ to do righteousness, does so by the circumcision of Christ, that changes our Spirit, then the righteousness of the law is fulfilled in the ones circumcised through Christ.

3. The ones who have no love of Christ shed into them by the conversion of the Holy Ghost, hate their brother, do unrighteousness against them. This is why the ones who are not given power by Christ to do righteousness are not of God.

4. When made alive from the dead (dead in unrighteousness) you become an instrument (new vessel) of righteousness unto God, as the previous man, creature, plant, was an instrument of unrighteousness.

5. There is growth, but not for the ones without the Love of Christ, the Holy Spirit, the new covenant in the heart, the ones without the Spiritual fear of God, th ones who show they have no understanding or belief in righteousness, they grow nowhere into nothing, what a farce to say DEEPER LOOK, how can the blind look even more blindly.

Romans 6:13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

Adam knows he can’t refute all the evidence I showed disproving his false sinless perfectionism so he’s reduced to his lobbing the best weapon in his toy box arsenal—a blindfold. Ya just ignore the evidence and call names.

are you hardened by the deceitfulness of sin littlequiz, if you are no wonder you cant answer and talk, proven all too easily read or do not.

I increase learning, do you increase by speaking nothing of your own, and by mocking all questions and answers that come your way. The new thread for the sluggard slothful mocker to ignore and not study to answer is more testimony you need to put your sunglasses on for and invent another evil reasion you wont look or discuss..

Proverbs 9:8 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.

9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

Hebrews 3:13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.

Proverbs 21:28 A false witness shall perish: but the man that heareth speaketh constantly.

29 A wicked man hardeneth his face: but as for the upright, he directeth his way.

You are the one with the 'blindfold' on David and proved ZERO evidence against Adam!

YEAH I started to read the CULTISH article but shortly starting I began so hard my eyes watered because I have read so many of these CULT teachings through the years! Its simply another 'righteousness by continually sinning' article and YES the language IS BEYOND foolishness that even a child could see through the slime theology teachings ! LMBO!

Lets get back to the core problem in this thread friends, since David the dreamy persecutor has ZERO EVIDENCE toward Adam for conviction anyway! The title of this thread is a 'Deeper look at 1 John 1:8-10' correct? Its the old tricky slight of hand houdini trick of leaving OUT ENTIRE CONTEXT to what the rest of the book of John says and certainly the rest of the Bible context on the subject. ITS WHAT I KEEP TELLING YOU MISFITS, CONTEXT OF ENTIRE BIBLE, not just a few verses in the same chapter OR the whole chapter in general!

Sooooooo the big question needs to be asked, does the Bible have contradictions??? Ummm.... easy answer, NOOOOOO!!!! David says the Bible does, is that true friends? David claims to be 'inspired' by his CULT 'church' when singling out John 1:8-10, his houdini trick they taught to him! You see David reads it as because his 'church' has taught the goyim servant David that is, what the Bible says that 'if we say we have no (CONTINUAL) sin' and we don't CONTINUE to 'confess our sins' all the day and time until the cows come home, then we are saying 'that we have not sinned (CONTINUALLY)' like a pink energizer bunny that keeps going and going...... “we then make Him (YHWH the Father) a liar' because we don't CONTINUE to keep on sinning!

That's the doctrine of the CULT 'church' of David and his CULTISH articles! You see? I mentioned contradictions in the Bible that David suggests and teaches. Lets look at the Houdini trick of leaving out CONTEXT of the WHOLE book of John that littlestDavid does, shall we?

1 john 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him >>>purifieth himself, even as he is pure.<<<

4. Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for >>>sin is the transgression of the law.<<<

5.And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and >>>in him is no sin.<<<

6. Whosoever abideth >>>in him sinneth not:<<< whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

7. Little children, let no man deceive you: >>>he that doeth righteousness is righteous,<<< even as he is righteous.

8. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

9.Whosoever is >>>born of God doth not commit sin;<<< for his seed remaineth in him: and >>>he cannot sin,<<< because he is born of God.

So is there a contradiction between John 1:8-10 to that of 1 John 3:3-9? NOT HARDLY but only to those that are LOST to truth!

You know friends, when a person like Quiz does NOT believe the Father had taken a PART of Himself, which IS His WORD and put it in flesh to make His only begotten Son just as the Bible says and also does not WANT to know that the Father has a set apart Spirit called His Holy Spirit, then that person just denies TRUTH! Its that simple!

John 1:1 - 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with YHWH, and the >>>Word was YHWH.<<<' Himself!

Note as clear as a bell that the WORD of the father was Himself - 'Word was YHWH' and NOT the WORD was another YHWH!

And what was YHWH's WORD he put in HUMAN flesh that is full of Grace and truth?

And >>>the Word was made flesh,<<< and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only >>>begotten of the Father,<<<) full of grace and truth.

Obviously the Messiah did Not make Himself but is OF THE FATHER just like Scripture says! You know like John 10:30 -  'I (or I'am that I'am) and my Father are one.' and the same!

If we say we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
