Posted : 14 Oct, 2020 04:53 PM Some people believe the “rock” Jesus mentions in the his parable is himself others believe it is God others believe there is another answer. In fact, the surrounding context of the parable can’t be more clear about the rock’s identity. What or who then is the “rock“ of which/whom Jesus is speaking? My last text with the Matthew 7 copy and paste verses must not have copied!!! Well, here they come again. Mathew 7:24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” Post Reply

"What do you do when you hear what I say?" "If you do what I say, you are like a man who built his house on a rock. If you don't do what I say, you are like a man who built his house on sand." I don't see any significance to the word rock or sand, etc. Post Reply

Posted : 15 Oct, 2020 08:26 AM I would set forth for consideration the significance of the words rock and sand, especially the analogical rock (obedience), which determines the stability of the analogical house (perhaps a person’s way of life). In the parable, the significance of the rock foundation (obedience) is elevated in comparison to the significance of the sand foundation (disobedience). For example, both men built houses and both houses confront the storm. But only one house withstands the storm. According to Jesus, the right foundation (obedience to Jesus) determines the fall of the one house and the stability of the other. For all intensive purposes the houses are in full view and may look a like to the causal observer. But below the surface on which the houses rest lays the quality of the foundation. One person hears the word of God and obeys it (the one who builds on rock), the other disobeys the word of God (the one who builds on sand) Post Reply

Posted : 15 Oct, 2020 08:38 AM I don’t want to complicate things further but I might add that the house represents a persons way of life, as l indicated above, but the house represents only the outward way of life observed by others as they past by. Some people look pretty good as they loudly plunk down coinage for the poor, and piously pray loudly in full view of a synagogue audience like in Jesus’ day but underneath lays a sandy foundation of disobedience.
