Context Matters: You Have Heard That it was Said…But I Say to You

JULY 27, 2018 BY PETER KROL

Perhaps you’ve heard about Jesus’ disagreement with the Old Testament. The people of Israel had received a set of laws through Moses, but Jesus trumped them in his Sermon on the Mount. An extreme version of this view might say that Jesus disregarded the Old Testament law and put a new law in its place. A softer view might say that Jesus took the outwardly focused OT laws and added to them an inward dimension, focused on the heart. But perhaps we should take a closer look.

My goal in this post is not to develop a comprehensive theology of Old and New Testaments, nor to explain what our thinking should be on the OT law. My aim is more focused. I want to look at just one passage that some might use to claim that Jesus either set aside, or in some way added to, the law of Moses.

Context matters. If we learn to read the Bible for what it is—and not as a collection of independently assembled proverbial sayings—we’ll discover that some of our most familiar passages don’t actually mean what we’ve always assumed.

The Pertinent Formula

I’m referring to Jesus’ repeated formula: “You have heard that it was said…But I say to you…” (Matt 5:21, 27, 31, 33, 38, 43). Seems clear enough, right? You have heard what Moses said—you shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, and so on—but I have something new and/or different to say. Moses was great, but I am greater. The old has become obsolete and is ready to disappear; the new has come. The law of liberty. The law of love. The law of Christ.

The Immediate Context

But look at where Jesus just came from. Remember that the Sermon on the Mount was a sermon. It was all spoken at once. In fact, what Matthew has recorded to us could be spoken out loud in about 10 minutes, and it’s highly unlikely that such large crowds would have gathered on a mountain for only a 10-minute speech. So Matthew has likely condensed and summarized all that Jesus actually spoke that day. But the point remains: Don’t break it into tiny pieces. Read the sermon as a unit.

And right before Jesus launches into his sixfold “but I say to you” formula, he makes the following introductory comments:

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matt 5:17-20)

Jesus could not be more clear about the fact that he did not come to abolish the Law. Certainly, we can debate what exactly it means that he came to “fulfill” it. But there is no question that Jesus did not come to abolish it (Matt 5:17). Heaven and earth will pass away before the tiniest stroke of the Law passes away (Matt 5:18). And Jesus has no goodwill toward anyone who would relax “one of the least of these commandments” or teach others to relax them. The great ones in his kingdom are those who do the Law, and who teach others to do it (Matt 5:19). And to even enter Jesus’ kingdom, we must have a righteousness that exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees (Matt 5:20).

Interesting. Note all the contrasts lined up in a row:

Jesus came not to abolish the Law :: Jesus came to fulfill the Law

Heaven and earth will not pass away :: The Law will be accomplished

Anyone who relaxes even a single command, and teaches others to do so, is least :: Anyone who does the commands, and teaches others to do them, is great

Scribes and Pharisees [presumably, by the sentence’s logic] will not enter the kingdom :: Those more righteous than scribes and Pharisees will enter the kingdom

So Jesus contrasts his purpose (fulfill) with what is not his purpose (abolish). And he contrasts right use of the law (do) with wrong use of the law (relax). And he contrasts those who get into the kingdom (more righteous than scribes) with those who don’t (scribes).

And then… He works through 6 more contrasts, 6 case studies, having to do with the Law. “You have heard that it was said…. But I say to you….” The context therefore suggests that the 6 contrasts of verses 21-48 are following on the theme of verses 17-20. In other words, they are contrasting those who abolish or relax the commands with those who do them and teach them.

The Quotations (OT Context)

But that doesn’t make sense of the fact that Jesus actually quotes the Old Testament laws! The thing he is negating is the Old Testament text. The OT Law. “You shall not murder,” “You shall not commit adultery,” and so on.

But there is more here than meets the eye.

Littlest David's LYING QUOTES:

Richard has quoted many scriptures used out of context and twisted to fit the pagan pacifistic model."

"So I’m going to refute each of Pinocchio’s arguments one by one."

Littlest David then fails to refute even one of the Scriptures I quoted in defense of New Testament Christian Pacifism! You can easily tell that his analysis of Scripture is completely Satanic and non-sensible and he fails to mention any NT Scripture which absolutely contradicts his conclusions.

** THE GREAT BIBBLE BELIEVING CHRISTIAN PACIFISTS IN THE PAST 2,000 YEARS**

The Bible believing pacifists in the past 2,000 years have set a great example for all Christians throughout the past centuries. After Marin Luther broke away from the Roman Catholic church the the German country broke away from the Roman Catholic Church and then there was a period of almost total war between the Roman Catholics in France and the Protestants in Germany for 100 years.

There were many good Christians in Germany that were Christians before the Protestants such as the Amish, Menonites, Brethren and Anabapists. They believed in the teachings of Jesus and were greatly persecuted by the Protestants in Germany and many were put in jail and killed because they refused to join the army and become professional killers.

And so these Bible believing Christians fled to Holland and waited for ships to take them to America where they could follow the commands of Jesus in peace. There have been many great Christian preachers in the past like D.L.Moody who founded the famous Moody Bible college and Charles Spurgeon. Moody was responsible for thousands of Northern Bapists not joining the evil Civil War and killing Southern Baptists.

Christian pacifists understand that every country will have armies and they do not assemble protests against their country's armies. Christian Bible believing pacifists do not interfere police actions which discipline and imprison evil unbelievers. Pacifists just choose to obey God's word and avoid signing a Satanic enlistment Oath and becoming professional killers. Instead they believe in sending missionaries to all the countries of the world which try to love and convert their enemies and teach them to obey all the Divine Commandments of the New Covenant!

Looks like Littlest David believes like Teddyhugger that Jesus made no changes to the Old Testament changes listed below. It is interesting to note the LittlestDavid does not exegete or answer any of the Divine mmandments listed below!!

**JESUS SAYS NEVER MAKE AN OATH OR VOW, AND LOVE AND FORGIVE ALL YOUR ENEMIES**!!

In the OT God ordered Israel to kill their enemies many times and God helped them do it. However in the NT Jesus commands in Luke 6:27-29: "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also."

Matthew 5:43,44: Jesus says, "You have heard that is was said, {in the OT} 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you. love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven!!"

Whereas in the OT in Leviticus 26:7,8: God said to Israel, "You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall by the **SWORD** before you. Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the **SWORD** before you!"

Numbers 25:16,17" The Lord said to Moses, "Treat the Midianites as enemies and kill them!"

Numbers 32:20,21: Moses said to them, "if you will do this--if you will arm yourselves before the Lord for battle and if all of you who are armed cross over the Jordan before the Lord until He has driven out His enemies out before Him!!"

Deuteronomy 6:18,19: Do what is right and good in the Lord's sight, that it may go well with you and you may go in and take over the good land the Lord has promised on oath to your ancestors, **THRUSTING OUT ALL YOUR ENEMIES BEFORE YOU**, as the Lord said!

Deuteronomy 23:14: For the Lord your God moves about in your camp to protect you and to deliver your enemies to you!

Deuteronomy 28:7 The Lord will grant that your enemies who go up against you will be defeated before you!

Deuteronomy 30:7: The Lord your God will put all these curses on your enemies who hate and persecute you!

Another OT command in Exodus 21:23-25 "If there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise."

This was also changed by these NT commands by Jesus:

Matthew 5:38,39: Jesus commands, "You have heard that it was said {In Exodus 21:23-25 above}, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek turn to him the other also!"

Luke 6:27-29: Jesus commands, "LOVE YOUR ENEMIES, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you. do not demand it back!"

Luke 6:27-30: Jesus says, "Love your enemies, do good to those that hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. Give to everyone who asks you, and if someone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back!"

Luke 6:33-36: Love your enemies, do good to them and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your **REWARD** will be great and you will be children of the Most High because He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as you Father is merciful!"

Matthew 18:21,22: Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister {or wife} who sins against me? Up to 7 times?" Jesus answered, "I tell you not 7 times but 77 times!" {Also can be translated 70 times 7 times!}

I Peter 3:9: Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called that you may **INHERIT A BLESSING**!

Matthew 5:9: Jesus the **PRINCE OF PEACE** says, "Blessed are the **PEACEMAKERS**, for they will be called the **CHILDREN OF GOD**!"

2 Corinthians 10:3-5: For though we live in the world, **WE DO NOT MAKE WAR AS THE WORLD DOES**! The weapons we fight with **ARE NOT THE WEAPONS OF THE WORLD**. On the contrary, they have **DIVINE POWER** to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God!

Ephesians 6:17: Take the helmet of salvation and the **SWORD** OF THE SPIRIT** which is the **WORD OF GOD**!!

I Peter 2:20-23: If you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps.... When they hurled their insults at Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats. Instead He entrusted Himself to Him who judges Justly!

I Peter 3:8,9,11: Finally, all of you, be like minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. **DO NOT REPAY EVIL FOR EVIL** or insult with insult. On the contrary, **REPAY EVIL WITH BLESSING**, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. For... "They must turn from evil and do good; they **MUST SEEK PEACE AND PURSUE IT**!"

Romans 14:17-19: For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, **PEACE** and joy in the Holy Spirit, because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God an receives human approval. Let us therefore make every effort to do **WHAT LEADS TO PEACE**!

Hebrews 12:14 Make every effort **TO LIVE IN PEACE WITH EVERYONE**!

Matthew 5:43-45: Jesus says, "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' {As per the OT}. But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven!"

Matthew 6:14,15: Jesus says, "If you forgive other people who sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, you Father will not forgive your sins!"

John 18:36: Jesus says, "My Kingdom is not of this world. If it were, My servants would fight to prevent My arrest. But now My Kingdom is from another place!"

Luke 23:33,34: When they came to the place of the Skull, they crucified Him there... Jesus said, "Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing!"

Romans 12:19-21: Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord. On the contrary: If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty give him something to drink. In doing this you will heap burning coals on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, but **OVERCOME EVIL WITH GOOD**!

I Peter 4:8-10: Above all, **LOVE** each other deeply, because **LOVE** covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms! Colossians 3:12-15: As God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on **LOVE**, which binds them all together in perfect unity! Let the **PEACE OF CHRIST** rule in your hearts. since of members of one body, you were **CALLED TO PEACE**!

Isaiah 9:6,7: For unto us a Child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, and **PRINCE OF PEACE**. Of the greatness of His government and **PEACE** there will be no end!!

Ephesians 4:31,32: Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with **ANY FORM OF MALICE**. Be kind and compassionate to one another just as in Christ God forgave you!!

**IS A CHRISTIAN SINNING WHEN HE MAKES ANY VOW AND OATH TO ENLIST IN THE USA MILTARY**??

What is the OT command concerning *VOWS* and *OATHS*?? Numbers 30:2: Moses said, "This is what the Lord commands: When a man makes a *VOW* to the Lord or takes an *OATH* to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not beak his word but must do everything he said."

But what are the NT commands concerning making *VOWS* and **OATHS*??

James 5:12: "ABOVE ALL, my brothers, do not swear--not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your "Yes" be ye and your "No," no, or you will be condemned.!!"

Matthew 5:33-37: Jesus says, "You have heard that it was said to your people long ago {In Numbers 30:2 above}, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.' BUT I tell you, Do not swear at all....Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No, 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one!!"

Federal law requires everyone who enlists or re-enlists in the Armed Forces of the United States to take the enlistment **OATH**!

The **OATH** of enlistment is administered by any commissioned officer to any person enlisting or re-enlisting for a term of service into any branch of the military.

The military **OATH** of enlistment (re-enlistment) is fairly straightforward for most military personnel. It's administered by a superior officer, and carried out like most traditional oaths, with the officer reading the oath and the person being sworn repeating it.

**OATH** for US Armed Forces after raising their right hand:

I, (NAME), do **SOLEMNLY SWEAR** that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. **SO HELP ME GOD**.

And so anyone who **SOLEMNLY SWEARS**.. **SO HELP ME GOD** and who **KILLS HIS ENEMIES** is breaking two New Covenant Commands of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, even Armed Forces Medics and Chaplains have to take this **OATH**!

John 16:12-14: Jesus says, "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all the Truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify Me because **IT IS FROM ME** that he will receive what he will make known to you!"

And holy spirit inspired the 8 writers of the 27 books of the New Testament to write**EVERTHING JESUS TOLD HIM TO WRITE**!!

Hebrews 12:1,2: Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the **AUTHOR** and **PERFECTER** of our faith!!

Matthew 28:18-20: Jesus says, "**ALL AUTHORITY** in heaven and **ON EARTH** has been given to **ME**. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations...teaching them to obey **EVERYTHING** I have commanded you {THE ENTIRE NEW TESTAMENT} and surely I am **WITH YOU ALWAYS**, to the very end of the age!!"

Matthew 10:27: Jesus says, "What I tell you in the dark, **SPEAK** in the daylight; what I whisper in your ear **PROCLAIM FROM THE HOUSETOPS**!!"

Now the truth.

The Amish, Brethern, and Anabaptists all started AFTER the Protestant Reformation started.

Oh Pinocchio Pinocchio, PLEASE don’t read my posts!!

If your depressed now just wait til you read how wrong you’ve been and how you’ve messed up and twisted the very words of Jesus.

It would probably be better for you to just spare yourself of the truth and just keep that mind (yes—I’m positively assuming you have one) but as I was saying, keep that mind water tight closed so not even a gnats eye brow worth of truth can seep in

I used to think jeeps were good until you and your dad chucky boy came along dizzy quizzy, as I noticed you two worshipping them. Why else would you have a picture of one as your idol! Obvious, no? You remind me of your favorite prophet Richard the pathetic7744 teacher/twin and his **IDOLS** glued to the top of his roman chariot buggy!!! All hail to the idols, says pathetic, chuckk and dizzy quizzy!!!

Being you cannot even "educate" or "teach" in the thread YOU CLAIMED YOU WOULD "TEACH" IN, like in the forum location "Suggest New forum Topics" and your thread there titled "How about a section where people can learn how to read, study and translate the Scripture", and FAILING to do so, I then just KNEW you were incapable of recommending a reliable vehicle like a jeep! Obvious, no?

So NOW I know I cannot trust jeeps because your unholy "spirit" in your head, revealed in your dizzy head that jeeps were reliable!

NOW I KNOW not to buy one! Thanks for the heads up dizzy quizzy!!!

By the way, RetroMillennial the SCIENTIST really OWNED you in your thread title above! You was SPEECHLESS (and still are!) when he called you out to GET ON with proving your point and YOU could not do so! What happened, your unholy "spirit" that

does not know "verbs and tenses" leave town???

Littlest David's LYING QUOTES:

Richard has quoted many scriptures used out of context and twisted to fit the pagan pacifistic model." "So I’m going to refute each of Pinocchio’s arguments one by one."

Littlest David then fails to refute even one of the Scriptures I quoted in defense of New Testament Christian Pacifism! You can easily tell that his analysis and exegesis of Scripture is completely Satanic and non-sensible and he fails to mention any NT Scripture which absolutely contradicts his conclusions.

** THE GREAT BIBBLE BELIEVING CHRISTIAN PACIFISTS IN THE PAST 2,000 YEARS**

The Bible believing pacifists in the past 2,000 years have set a great example for all Christians throughout the past centuries. After Marin Luther broke away from the Roman Catholic church the the German country broke away from the Roman Catholic Church and then there was a period of almost total war between the Roman Catholics in France and the Protestants in Germany for 100 years

They completely rejected the mainstream Protestants beliefs of Martin Luther including infant baptism, the belief that James and Revelation were not inspired by God, a modified Satanic mass and the authority of the church and accepted the beliefs of many small Christian sects active before the Reformation.

Matthew 18:21,22: Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister {or wife} who sins against me? Up to 7 times?" Jesus answered, "I tell you not 7 times but 77 times!" {Also can be translated 70 times 7 times!} I Peter 3:9: Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult.
