In His death and resurrection, our faith and lives are redeemed, but His body is not renewed (see St. Thomas' request/demand in Jn 20). I contemplate on this very much. The God I'm familiar with (I read OT mostly in formative years) is all powerful. He is everything and likewise can do everything. Surely the Son of God that cured the blind and hemorrhaging could have performed similar miracles upon himself.

That He did not suggests it was not the will of the God. For Jesus, together God and human, always submitted to the will of God. See the trial in the desert, tests by the pharisees and agony in the garden.

So what is the purpose? I've heard:

- Our sins today make us share in the responsibility for God, out of His infinite mercy, ransoming His Son to allow us to be redeemed. Thus Jesus is indefinitely wounded and paying the price for our sins.

- Christ' wounds serve a reminder of His awful suffering. The crucifix and his wounds cause us to avoid sin.

- As Jesus lived as human and God, He rose as human and God. Showing us He is fully capable of understanding our trials. He carried His cross, and can help us carry ours.

I can see value in all the answers, particularly #3 as its a continuation of His ministry and #1 because its relation to the convenant and God's infinite love.

Any thoughts?

I'm not sure I'm understanding, but will give it a try.

I don't think his body ever rotted or was soiled, so there would be no renewel. The wounds might be a sign as said before me. Consider the man who pierced his ear as a sign of his loyalty to his kind master. Since this is Jesus, and the master and servant of Himself, he's done no wrong and marked himself to honor the Father and His will, a physical sign of his sacrifice. This is certainly for us to see as with many things done, since the Lord only needs to see the heart.
