Question - Which Denomination?

I believe Roman Catholic was the first "denomination," but God didn't want us to be divided. When Paul rebuked the Corinthian church, he said this:

God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? I Corinthians 1:9-13

We are told to teach the same things and to have the same mind and judgment.

Paul also said to the church in Ephesus,

I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. Ephesians 4:1-6

One faith - we weren't meant to split into denominations.

Samson,

Personally, I think all the different denominations are probably the best trick satan ever came up with. Yes, I said satan! Think about it, if we all quit fighting amongst ourselves and focused on fighting satan and the forces of darkness, they wouldn't stand a chance!!! Why is it that man has this inherent need to feel superior to his neighbor? My idea of God is better than your idea of God, Nahhhhhhh!

Sometimes we sound like a bunch of kids on the playground.

dear samson,, now im not a real smart man. but im gonna take a shot at it.. werent they just called christians and not a denomination as such? i mean here they taught for a whole year in antioch to the church, and i dont see a label of denomination put on them. i just see they were called christians..

acts 11:26 And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.

google brief history of denominations.

For the first thousand years of Christian history, there were no "denominations" within the Christian church as there are today.

Various offshoot groups certainly existed, but they were considered "heresies" and not part of the Christian church. Most were small and, until the 16th century, were never very influential. From the beginnings of Christianity through the Middle Ages, there was only one the catholic ("universal") church. Basically, if you did not belong to the Church, you were not considered a Christian.

my two cents...for what its worth...and this is based on no study whatsoever, but simply on my understanding of god and christianity. god did not establish any denomination, neither did the apostles or jesus (who i DO believe is also god...just to avoid any misunderstanding :D) when he was here on earth.

what they established was the church - a group of people of like beliefs and moral lifestyles (ideally obviously...we all fail) who shared a common goal and saviour in jesus christ and who had comitted their lives to seeking him and furthering his kingdom.

denomination are something created by man over the years, due to an inability to reconcile their differences in belief when it comes to the "right" way to DO things....what they lost sight of though, was that it is NOT AT ALL about what you do....it is ENTIRELY about who you ARE in christ that makes you christian...

anyway, like i said, thats just my two cents worth :)....

That's funny - thanks for the laugh.

If there are no stalls in heaven, why are there stalls on earth?
