Can anybody clearly and concisely explain what this passage means? I'm rather confused by it. Thank you.

Wow! So I just looked up this passage, and I was in complete awe because early this week a friend of mine was showing me something that a girl she met at an airport had written my friend. It was dealing with this. My friend was told me to read what the girl had written her and said there was something that went along with it and it and it was a mustard seed. That was one of the tiniest seeds I had ever seen. It was upon that time that it only takes that amount of faith inside of you for God to be able to start to work in you! As God works your faith will mostly like increase as well!

God Bless,

Cristy

Luke 17:5-6

------------------------------------

5The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!"

6He replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you."

-----------------------------------

To have faith as small as a mustard seed that can uproot a mulberry tree, sounds impossible for us to attain. When the disciples asked the Lord to increase their faith, the Lord did not answer them directly, but instead, He told them that if they have faith as small as a mustard seed, they can order the mulberry tree to uproot itself and be planted in the sea.

This means we don't need to dream or desire for a greater faith so that we can uproot all obstacles and problems in our lives. It is enough that we have faith in the Lord no matter how big it is or how small it is. No need to uproot mulberries...all we need is to be able to forgive those who trespass against us many times. We need just enough faith to fight a good fight, to finish the course well. Paul said to Timothy, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith..." (2 Timothy 4:7)

spri1458,

The same verse is in Matt. 17:20 except they use a mountain in that one, which is the one I was most familiar with. I always thought that the mountains, mulberry trees they were talking about were obstacles in our lives. Whether it be addictions, habitual sins, whatever, if we have just a little faith that Christ can bring us through these things we can overcome anything in our lives.

dear spry1 , this coincides with my faith here a little bit. the LORD is tellin you that if you just have a tiny little bit of faith you can perform miracles , heal the sick and have your prayers answered if you just have a little bit of faith in JESUS CHRIST ... and just think if you have a great amount of faith what all could be accomplished for HIS KINGDOM and glory.... have faith it will be done as asked in JESUS NAME.. remember with GOD all things are possible..

From what I've read then, the passage is saying that "a little faith can go a long way" and that "faith can move mountains". So, the apostles didn't need their faith increased, because they could do a lot with the faith they already had. My Bible worded this passage a bit strangely, so thanks for posting it.

I'm guessing that a mulberry tree is rather large. What is the significance of "the sea" in this passage"? Is it that a mulberry tree couldn't survive in the ocean, so the tiny mustard seed telling it to go into the ocean and the tree obeying would be an even greater feat than the seed only telling the tree to move?
