Parable of the ten virgins

May the Lord Jesus help us to understand His Word and give us the wisdom and guidance to truly live in the Spirit in Him. Amen.

Mt 25:1-13

This parable concerns ten virgins, five wise and five foolish. All of them know the bridgroom (Jesus) because they are all gong forth to meet Him. Clearly we can infer that both 'sets' make up the Church. But there is an important difference between them, five ensure that they have enough oil while the other five do not. What is the oil referring to?

Isiah 62:1

Ex27:20

God needs us to always have a lamp burning for Him. So the five who neglected to be prepared truly were foolish, but when the Bridegroom finally came He was mercifull and let them in anyway because they were already saved and believed in Him...NO, He didn't let them in because thier lamps had gone out!

2Sam 3:33

Ezekiel 33:31

God needs us to be ever faithful.

This parable which Jesus uses to illustrate the Kingdom of Heaven comes just after his end times prophcies in Mt 24 and precedes another parable about Heaven and a discourse about the sheep and the goats. I believe that the Lord is very concerned about the welfare of His Church and is using these last few moments of His earthly ministry (the Last Supper appears in Mt 26) to fervently warn the Church against complacency.

Mt 25:13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.
