Jesus & the Samaritan Woman

Main themes of the story

The Samaritan woman is not given a name. She is a foreigner from a despised religious group. Her story makes a clear statement about the role of women in the early Christian communities.

The woman was not silent, nor was she limited to the private world of women. She had a voice, and she moved out into the public arena, into male space.

She entered into debate with Jesus about issues and questions that interested her.

She did not wait for permission to speak, but took the initiative.

She experienced the progressive stages of faith in Jesus:

She met Jesus.

She learnd about Him.

She came to believe in Him.

She went and told other people about Him.

The story of the Samaritan woman has 3 parts:

1 The woman meets Jesus at a well John 4:1-26

Jesus and his disciples stop at a roadside well. He meets a Samaritan woman; why is she alone and not with other women? She questions him boldly and becomes convinced he is the Messiah.

2 The woman returns to her town John 4:27-38

The disciples return. They are hostile to her but she ignores them. She goes back to her town. When she gets there she tells everyone about Jesus - like an apostle she 'went and told' others about Jesus so that they too became believers. They come out of the village to see for themselves. The disciples urge Jesus to eat, but he says he has already had food.

3 The woman convinces many people about Jesus John 4:39-42

Many Samaritans believe, because of the woman. Jesus stays with the townspeople for two days. It did not matter that she was a woman and a Samaritan. Gender and nationality were not important. No one was excluded from the Christian community.

Here is a list of the Women of the Bible. They are real people. Some with names some without. They have identities and stories. The ones that are nameless heightened the symbolism in their stories.

The prohibition on women teaching is not given in the context of a discussion -- one-on-one or in a group, such as over one's own dinner table. It is also a prohibition on women teaching men. Women are actually instructed to teach younger women.

Paul does prohibit women from teaching men in the context of the church service or another position of authority or holding the office of pastor/elder or deacon.

Some of the best biblical discussions I have witnessed involved multiple families around a long table. The wives did not take the lead, but would comment, usually in support of their husbands -- either bringing up a supporting point, another quotation, or explaining the point from a slightly different perspective. It was a beautiful example of the wife being a suitable helper to her husband. She was thinking on her own, and yet in harmony with him.

*** This post isnt about a woman teacher...its about a woman who Jesus picked out of all the woman in the area to go forth and proclaim HIM!!! :bouncy:...Possibly your thoughts were on another post ???...I will be most happy to remark on what you have shared here as it is important...

*** Yes Paul does certainly Prohibit woman from teaching and asking questions of men in a Jewish Synagog...thats how it was in that church at the time...it was choatic...dis-organized and thats what Paul was trying to do...bring order...Jewish woman Espically Orthodox are seperate from the men...even at the Waling wall...they were treated as 2nd class citizens...Jesus doesn't do that to women...as seen in this Post about the Samaritan Woman...:excited:...even the Apostles didn't like that He was talking to her and he paid no attention to them...He was showing them by example....teaching and leading as is His way...
