Is it important to know Greek and Hebrew when studying the Bible?

I like this answer!!
Question: "Is it important to know Greek and Hebrew when studying the Bible?"
Answer: Martin Luther, the great Protestant reformer, wrote the following in regard to the importance of understanding Greek and Hebrew when studying the Scriptures: "The languages are the sheath in which the sword of the Spirit is contained." God sovereignly chose to have His Word written in Hebrew (the Old Testament) and Greek (the New Testament).
Our modern English translations are excellent. Most of the major English translations available today are superb renderings of the original Greek and Hebrew. However, in any translation, not everything that was communicated in the original language can be precisely conveyed in another language. Some nuances do not transfer well from one language to another. As a result, a translation rarely is a perfect rendering of the original. (This is one reason why the Amplified Version was published.)
An example of this is the "aspect" of Greek verbs. English verbs have tensespast, present, and future. Greek verbs have these same tenses, but they also have what is known as "aspect." Present-tense Greek verbs mean more than the action is occurring presently. A Greek verb can also carry the meaning that the action is occurring continually or repeatedly. This is lost in English unless the aspect word "continually" or "repeatedly" is added to the translation along with the verb. A specific example of this is Ephesians 5:18, "...be filled with the Spirit." In the original Greek, this verse is telling us to continually be filled with the Spirit. It is not a one-time eventit is a lifelong process. This "aspect" is lost in the English translation.
With all that said, the Bible also makes it clear that the Spirit is the author of the Bible and that He will help us to understand the His Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17; John 14:26). You do not have to know Hebrew and Greek in order to understand the Bible. God's intended message for us is accurately communicated in English. You can have confidence that God can reveal the meaning of His Word to you without your knowing Greek and Hebrew.
Perhaps this is a good analogy: reading the Bible without knowing Greek and Hebrew is like watching a 20" television, while reading the Bible knowing Greek and Hebrew is like watching a 65" LED 1080p HDTV with stereo surround sound. You can understand what is going on with the 20" television, but the 65" LED HDTV with stereo surround sound gives added depth and clarity. With the help of the Holy Spirit, anyone can accurately understand the Bible in English. However, knowing Hebrew and Greek helps to better understand the nuances and richness of the biblical texts.

Hi hidden:
To know Hebrew and Greek or not to know Hebrew and Greek;that is the question.
I find this question really needs to be answered Biblically, not using a tv as an example.
The reason the so called senior pastors, pastors,'church' leaders, and others using a host of other titles and names will NEVER teach the people how to read, study, and translate the Word of GOD; is they do not want the people knowing the truth of the Word of GOD.
Knowing the truth will set the people free from the hogwash they are telling the people.
Having the basics of reading, studying, and translating the Word of GOD will be of great importance to the people, but will cost the so called 'church' much money and we cannot have that.
The following Scripture has been translated wrongly by EVERY translation posted.
By not knowing ANY Greek, the people hearing this Scripture have been taught wrongly concerning the Vine and the branches.
Parallel Verses
New International Version
He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.

every branch in me not bearing fruit, He doth take it away, and every one bearing fruit, He doth cleanse by pruning it, that it may bear more fruit;
Not knowing any Greek and Hebrew has been used by the enemy to keep people sucking on a spiritual bottle for many years.

So by your own words you are saying that the Holy Spirit isnt sufficient? Doesnt the scripture tell us thats all we really need for scripture to be revealed? You can study the original texts till you hair turns blue but without The Holy spirit revealing it, you may as well read the funny papers.
And another thing: Im so very tired of you making blanket statements about the pastors and churches! NOT ALL ARE APOSTATE and teach heresy. You are in error and you really need to stop. You take many an opportunity as of late to tear down the steeple and Id like you to abstain on MY posts please. I appreciate your knowledge and your input but I dont like you taking my posts for your personal agenda.Thank you

Yes Hidden you may call me Jude....
I liked the TV Analogy...and thats exactly why I study the Hebrew/Aramaic language...it gives so much more indepth meaning to the study at hand...it is the Original Lanuage of the Hebrew Israel Jew of which the Torah~1st 5 books of Moses / Nevi'im~Prophets / Ketuvim~ Writings hince the Tanakh also called the Masoretic Text oh and we must not forget the Latin...lol...
In Jesus time Aramaic was a dying language...and in our time [ 2000 years ] Hebrew "was" on its way out in the Holy Land...however...GOD will always keep His "written" Word safe and Hebrew is a Lanuage being used in parts of Israel today...its being "Restored"...and GOD is all about Restoration...:peace:...its the Lanuage of HIS People Israel...Greek is the Language of most of the NT...its also concidered a RomanGreko language that is on its way now...Latin will be around for some time as Spain, Italy, and even French are similar in lanuage structure... xo

Hey hidden:
I see you did not address the translations of the Scripture i posted,as MOST will people will never go beyond the translation they are being taught from Sunday morning, even the so called pastors will not go beyond the translation they read.
The Holy Spirit and the Word are sufficient, that is the Greek and Hebrew, not the translations.
Yet Messiah said to go into the world and make Disciples / Learners of ME,to know Messiah is to know what Has been written about Him in the Word of GOD,and experiencing what the Holy Spirit has revealed to you.
When i say 'SO CALLED' it should be SELF called,as an Elder is to be an older man,not a novice coming out from CEMETERY with some degrees,And the entire congregation should recognize that person has been empowered of the Holy Spirit to being an elder, and this will take some time.
