Saints Are Like Onions



The many layers that unfold

Falling away as it is peeled

Some tougher than others

The breadth of our lives

Some young and some old



Quite the analogy

if you care to ponder

Until they are cooked

Sweeter smells we are fonder



They stink to be frank

In the raw state that be

Without the heat

The layers are bound

By the skin and dirty debris





Once put to the fire

The process begins

The more tender the onion

The sweeter it is
