The Bible doesn't mention worship services at all. However, I think it is safe to say that we can call a church service a worship service if in fact the reason for the service is to worship God.
However, in most cases in the New Testament, the word worship means to lie prostrate in homage. But a different word for it also means to revere or adore. I would say the reference to a worship service has more to do with the latter rather than the former. Another word means to show piety and another means to serve or do service.
I'm not sure how much real worship happens in a worship service. It seams that singing songs pretty much covers it.
Rom 12:1 Therefore, brothers, I call on you through the compassions of God to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, pleasing to God, which is your reasonable service.
Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, in order to prove by you what is the good and pleasing and perfect will of God.
Here "reasonable service" is from the Greek logicos latriah, literally, "logical worship". Worship, according to Paul, is presenting your body as a living sacrifice. Not a whole lot to do with preaching and singing, right? And moreover, it is about the renewing of your mind so that you can be able to discern (prove) what the pleasing (acceptable) and perfect (complete) will of God is.
I suppose you could argue that there is really no such thing as a worship service in the Bible and you'd be right. If at this service there were acts of ministry, service, true worship taking place then perhaps it would be a worship service. But alas, the leaders of our churches do not allow the full expression of the gifts of the Spirit to take the place of their liturgical mastery over their congregations and so true worship really never takes place in churches at all. We are left to having to listen to singing our pop songs, to be interrupted by announcements and an offering and then the sermon and of course, the invitation to the altar. This is apparently what the church considers worship, even though the Bible had a completely different idea.
According to Jesus worship is to be done in Spirit and in Truth. Joh 4:23 But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. For the Father also seeks such, the ones worshiping Him.
Joh 4:24 God is a spirit, and the ones worshiping Him must worship in spirit and truth.
I wonder when the church will teach us to worship in spirit and in truth rather than in sermons and songs.
1Ch 16:29 Give to the LORD the glory due His name;
Bring an offering, and come before Him.
Oh, worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness!
Music ~ Singing ~
2Ch 5:13 indeed it came to pass, when the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD, and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and praised the LORD, saying:
"For He is good, For His mercy endures forever," [fn]
that the house, the house of the LORD, was filled with a cloud,
Listen to how Christians worship God by their lives and hearts in their prayers:
My friend says about God:
It is difficult to fathom
The infusion of your love
You are closer than my conscience
Always gentle as a dove.
Harvesting hearts for glory
Let's be open to His call
Sound reverberating praises
Uniting within his hallowed halls.
Jesus wants no sheep to falter
But be lead in victory
As we march in victorious splendor
Our open hearts of harmony!

Dear GOD, thank You for Your word that brings light into our life and for the grace that often surprises us. Please help us to trust that Your love and grace is a present which is given to us continually. Strengthen us so that we live as Your word teaches us. Help us to turn to You when we are in need. Make our lives a song of praise to You. Our prayers can change our circumstances. In a way similar to how we remove our old coat to put on the new, we take off our old nature to have it replaced with the nature of JESUS CHRIST. The more we look for grace, the more we will discover it. When we determine to take Your instructions into our minds and hearts - clothe ourselves in what we have learned - only then Your holy word becomes embodied in us and it will make a difference in our lives and in the lives of those we encounter.
My heart, O GOD, is steadfast; I will sing and make music with all my soul. Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. I will praise You, LORD, among the nations; I will sing of You among the peoples. For great is Your love, higher than the heavens; Your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O GOD, above the heavens; let Your glory be over all the earth. Psalm 108:1-5 NIV

Romans 12:1-2
Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living SACRIFICES, holy and pleasing to God--this is you rSPIRITUAL act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy in his dwelling place. Ascribe to the LORD, O families of nations, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength, ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name. Bring an offering and come before him; WORSHIP the LORD in the splendor of his holiness. Tremble before him, all the earth! The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved. Day and night they never stop saying: "HOLY, HOLY, HOLY IS THE Lord GOD ALMIGHTY, WHO WAS, AND IS, AND IS TO COME." Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne, and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: "You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being."
Revelation 14:7
He said in a loud voice, "Fear God and give him GLORY, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him (the SON of GOD!!!!) who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water."

Let's consider now how the King David worshiped God by his dances:
2 Samuel 6:12-16 ESV / 14 helpful votes
And it was told King David, The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God. So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the city of David with rejoicing. And when those who bore the ark of the Lord had gone six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fattened animal. And David danced before the Lord with all his might. And David was wearing a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound of the horn. As the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she despised him in her heart.
But what King David told her? And what the God of Israel think about it?
20 Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, How glorious was the king of Israel today, uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maids of his servants, as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!
21 So David said to Michal, It was before the Lord, who chose me instead of your father and all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel. Therefore I will play music before the Lord. 22 And I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight. But as for the maidservants of whom you have spoken, by them I will be held in honor.
23 Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.
Summary: This dance was BEFORE the Lord. We will be even more undignified than this worshiping God by our Lives and Sufferings for His name. We will be humble in our own sight. Why? Because God shall be honored and will be held in honor by us!
Our God Jesus said:
Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.
But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the TRUE worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is SEEKING such people to WORSHIP him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. John 4:21-24
I agree that Worship according to the Word of GOD Almighty is not what the 'church' is doing, nor does it seem that the people are even concerned that their gathering together is not according to the Scriptures.
Instead of 'worship' let us rather say 'WORTHSHIP',for what is the value of Yeshua to me,and how would i tell Him that.
YHWH does not leave man without any instructions on how He wants to be Worshiped;as man left to his own end will never be able to Worship Almighty GOD.
Man was created to Glorify GOD,to Know Him and to know who He is and what He is like, this is what it is to being a 'DISCIPLE' / learner of Messiah.
To be able to Worship GOD Almighty a person first needs to be a 'disciple' of Yeshua, you cannot Worship Messiah without KNOWING who He is and what He is like.
Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
They also need to have the Holy Spirit leading them into all truth,
John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
John 16:14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
We need the Word of GOD,as GOD Almighty has revealed Himself within His Word.
John6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
Eph_6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
Worship cannot be picked out by a man,or even a group of people ( so called 'worship leader').
Only the Holy Spirit is able to 'empower' a person to be Worshiping Messiah in spirit and in truth.
It is always interesting to see how the so called pastor, and so called worship leaders ALWAYS try to justify their existence in the body by ALWAYS going back into the OLD COVENANT using Moses and Kenanniah as the so called models for their meetings.
Messiah says,'YOU shall know the truth, and the truth shall male you free',
since the 'church' does not meet according to the Word of GOD Almighty, would you not say that the 'church' service is the labour of men,and not Messiah.
If this is so,is this not 'SIN', meaning missing the mark,as ordained by Messiah within the Scriptures.
If 'SIN' should there not be a public confession of willful unbelief of the Scriptures, should there not be a looking into the Word for the answers.
Maybe then there will be power within the body to Worship Messiah in spirit and truth.
Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the Lord our maker.
Ps 95:6
O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker.
Ps 96:9
O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.
According to this, worship is not singing and such; but it is an action taken in acknowledging the Lord as our LORD.
There is a difference between Praising the Lord and Worshiping Him. Lets take the subject of Praise:
Ps 9:11
Sing praises to the Lord, which dwelleth in Zion: declare among the people his doings.
Ps 33:2
Praise the Lord with harp, sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.
Is 42:12
Let them give glory unto the Lord, and declare his praise in the islands.
Heb 13:15
By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, this is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to his name.
According to the above, Praise consists of song, music, words, and we are to do this consistently, even when it is a sacrifice.
At times, when we?re having a rough time it can indeed be difficult to rejoice in what is taking place. But as we study the word of God, we know that everything is happening for a reason and that reason is for our growth and the Lord?s glory! (Rom 8:28)
According to the Word of God, the Lord inhabits the praises of His children.
Ps 22:3
But thou art holy, o holy that inhabitest the praises of Israel.
Wow what a promise! When we offer praises to the Lord, His spirit fills each word and His power goes forth. See this next verse:
2 Chr 20:22
And when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Sier, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.
These armies being stopped by the Lord, are pointing us in the direction of the enemy as he sets traps for us. As we praise the Lord we will walk in His power and protection.
Worship is part of obedience,, and Holiness,, I would say Inward
@versavia: as is the case with most Christians, you are missing the point completely. There is no argument here against the Bible nor is there anyone saying that praise and worship is not a part of Christian living. If you were really reading the posts you wouldn't be posting all of this Bible and actually say what you think, know , or tell what the Spirit has revealed to you.
We are talking about the idea of a worship service and not what worship is or is not. We are not saying people should not worship and praise God we are saying that the church does not practice true worship as if is described in the Bible.
