Hierarchy of Sin: Fact or Faked

Throughout my short time on this Earth, I've been introduced to many Christians who feel as if there is a "hierarchy of sin" and Christians who feel as if there is no such thing but that there are difference consequences for each sin (they also give exceptions such as blasphemy against the Holy Spirit as it is said to be unforgivable).

There is evidence to suggest both of these theories and while I have my own theory (I may or may not give my theory later on) I must admit this I am not as confidence in my knowledge of the existence of a hierarchy of sin as I am with other doctrine in the bible.

So, I would absolutely love it if you guys would state your beliefs and post whatever scripture available to support your claim. Please save me and all of the other forum readers time by making sure you are posting a passage that is NOT taken out of context; It's a pet peeve of mine. ;)

We know there is by studying Torah. Every law came with a different penalty. Some was ceremonial washing and being sent out from the community for a period of time while others were the death penalty, being stone to death... all of it was sin in a different degree.

I understand that but couldn't one argue that penalty is the result of the consequence and not of the severity of the sin?

All sin, no matter how big or small, is punishable by death, eternal separation from God in a literal (real) lake of fire unless an individual accepts God's gift of eternal life - accepts Christ's death on the cross as the substitutionary death for his/her sins.

The Bible details various earthly punishments for sins...some punishable by death (murder, adultery -- no longer practiced, etc).

Consider the comparison to your earthly parents - they meted out different levels of punishment for different acts of disobedience.

One comparison I've heard is comparing sin to trash - you may have a gum wrapper ( a small piece of trash) or a milk jug or large broken piece of furnitur -- all trash. A little 'white' lie is as much sin as murder.

James 2:!0 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
