What was the Purpose of Tongues?

Hi Everyone,

I am limited on time today, even though it's my day off...LOL...so I will post this article's location for you to read and study. It is worth the read and "study" as it very enlightening. This article goes into the depths of the "Prophesy" as to what was the purpose of Tongues. It was a prophesy given to Israel which was later "fulfilled".

i read the article and thats defiantly a different perspective than i have ever heard. it makes sense but i want to study up on it more. i have always had people talk to me about tongues, and they tell me they can but they never have an interpreter there. they say they just started doing it. i think people speak in tongues today do it because there caught in the motion and a lot of it is who can be more charismatic than the other. not that i am putting down people who speak in tongues im just saying theres always someone whos more charismatic than the next guy.some people get so caught up in the gifts that they miss the point of the gospel then it becomes more of works than it is faith. if anything to get out of Corinthians 13 is that before you can do any work of god you must have love hope and faith. but sometimes people miss that. thats just my input on the subject god bless every one who reads this and be strong in christ.

OH, NO! WALTER! NOT ANOTHER TONGUE THREAD!!!:excited::goofball::zzzz::zzzz:

There is not a forum on the internet that does not have a tongues thread going, and everybody has different religous beliefs and thoughts, and opinions about tongues. Geeeeezzz!

On one forum I was on, someone ask the question: Why do everybody who claim to speak in tongues, always say the say things? And its true, no matter what is going on, they speak the same three or four gibberish words...one liners.

Walter do you speak in tongues?

I speak in tongues ....Halashamasambaestalavista:yay:

No seriously, in the book of Acts chapter 1: verse 8, you find why the different tongues were gievn out by the Holy Spirit.

Jesus tells His disciples; But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you shall be WITNESSES to/of Me in Jersalem, and in all of Judea, and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

The disciples were given tongues for the works of the ministry, in that, they would minister the gospel to all the people in different regions, and this couldn't very well be done, without them knowing the languages of the people in these areas. Therefore, this was the purpose of the Holy Spirit empowering them with the languages of the people to whom they would minister the gospel about Jesus Christ. All the disciples, spoke the different languages or dialect of these people to where they were sent. This is why Paul rebukes the Corinthians for showing off their gifts trying to out do each other in the church. As he told then he spoke more languages than any of the Corinthians, but he would rather speak one word in his own language that other including himself understaood than to speak a word in a tongue (language) no one knew what he was saying.

Acts 2, we find that when Peter got up to speak to the crowd who had gathered after hearing all the noise on the Day of Pentecost, the word names all the men from all the different regions who were in Jeursalem, and we are told that "every man who stood listening to Peter ALL were amazed because they heard Peter and the disciples speaking to them in all their languages from where they were born. Then Luke names all the different places the men were from who heard Peter and the other disciples speaking the word of God in their languages( native tongue). Tongues is just another word for languages Luke used instead of languages.

So tongues (languages) are a gift of the Holy Sprit given for the ministering to a people who may not understand your native language. Therefore, without any knowledge or traingin in languages, the Holy Spirit equiped the disciples with the languages they would need to minster to the people.

I always ask those who claim to have this gifts of tongues

( languages) especially, to those who believe that the televangelist have this gift. My questions is: Why is it, that if they have the gift of tongues from the Holy Spirit, why do they need an interpreter when their go to Mexico or Africa... oooppps there it is!:peace::excited::rolleyes::peace:

ella you make a fine point, but if you read acts 2 and then you read 1 cor. you will find that there are 2 different kinds of gifts of tongues. in acts 2 they spoke in a tongue so everybody could understand them. and in 1cor. paul says that when you speak in tongues you are speaking to god through your spirit. and it is for the edification of the church so it would make since to have an interpreter if someone speaks in tongues in church and no one understands what they are saying. but paul says he rather speak in 5 simple words so people can understand him than 10000 words. no where in the bible does it specify on speaking in tongues and also does not say it ceased you . people want to twist the bible so they can teach what they want about it.
