As your Biblical knowledge widens

(John Angell James, "Christian Progress" 1853)

There are many who regard an increasing acquaintance

with the text of the Bible, as an evidence of growth in

grace.

Ask yourselves the solemn question. In proportion as

you store your minds with biblical texts and biblical

ideas--are you all the while seeking to have your

heart filled with biblical feelings, and your life with

biblical actions?

As you grow in acquaintance with the character of God--

do you reverence Him more? As your ideas brighten on the

person of Christ--do you love Him more? As you become

more acquainted with the perfection and spirituality of

God's Word--do you delight in it more? As you see more

clearly the evil of sin--do you hate it with a more intense

hatred?

As your Biblical knowledge widens, do you become . . .

more profoundly humble,

more tenderly conscientious,

more gentle,

more spiritual?

Unless this is the case, you are in a fatal mistake by

supposing that you are making progress in the divine

life, merely because you are advancing in biblical

knowledge.

I think this is a point that needs to be made every time you have a Christian, who is studying hard, and maybe reading systematic theology, etc.

There is the old joke about a Christian "having more spiritual pride than a first year seminary student."

Studying the Bible in depth, and studying theology is intoxicating stuff, and if you do it for the wrong reasons it will go bad on you.

You will start to think you are a cut above other Christians because you know things they don't, etc.

We have to keep in mind that we should not judge ourselves as Christians by how many books we have read, but rather what goes on in our hearts, and in our prayer life.

In Christ,

James

Pslm 18:25-26 "To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless, to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd."

To the Law lover you show youself a legalist, to the ufo groupie you show yourself.to be a alien, to the muslim you show yourself to be a great prophet, to the atheist you show yourself to be a great teacher, and to the reformer you show yourself to be a calvinist.

Bible study needs to be Spirit led or one will be led astray.
