Baptism:Water,Yes or No

Hello everyone:

I would like to repost about Baptism found in Matthew 28:18-20.

I will be posting from the King James Version (KJV),The Literal translation (LTIV) and Youngs Literal (YLT).

KJV: Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Mat 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

LTIV: Mat 28:18 And coming up Jesus talked with them, saying, All authority in Heaven and on earth was given to Me.

Mat 28:19 Then having gone, disciple all nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Mat 28:20 teaching them to observe all things, whatever I commanded you. And, behold, I am with you all the days until the completion of the age. Amen.

YTL: Mat 28:18 And having come near, Jesus spake to them, saying, `Given to me was all authority in heaven and on earth;

Mat 28:19 having gone, then, disciple all the nations, (baptizing them--to the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

Mat 28:20 teaching them to observe all, whatever I did command you,) and lo, I am with you all the days--till the full end of the age.'

Notice in the KJV verse 19

baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Baptizing them 'IN' the name.

The LTIV:

baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Baptizing them 'INTO" the name

Youngs:

(baptizing them--to the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

Baptizing them 'TO; the name.

The LYIV,and Youngs have translated this correctly.

For if i baptize a person 'IN' the name of the Father..........

This might be taken to be saying Water Baptism.

Yet this Scripture is not about Baptism, this Scripture about discipling a person unto the Name of YHWH,

and Immersing believers into/to the name of YHWH,along with His revealed compound names.

There are at least 27 revealed names of GOD.

If we are not doing this,i believe we are fulfilling what YHWH had spoken against the false prophets in Israel at that time.

Jer 23:27 They plot to cause My people to forget My name by their dreams which they tell, each one to his neighbor,

even as their fathers have forgotten My name for Baal.

Baals name is Lord (Baal).

We do not talk with Yeshua by His Hebrew name, instead we use a Greek title to talk with Him,and ABBA.

Within the names (s) of GOD,we find His revealed,Character, attitude,Personality.

Who He is,and What He is like.

We cannot know these just by submerging a person into

some water.

Could this be part of the problem as to why we do not know and understand the GOD of Abraham(Avraham,Isaac, and

Jacb Yacov)..

I know that this goes against most everything people have been taught about this.

Yet i would submit to you, that in these last days the Holy Spirit will bring to light ,that which has not been told in days past.

John 16:12 I have yet many things to tell you, but you are not able to bear now.

John 16:13 But when that One comes, the Spirit of Truth, He will guide you into all Truth, for He will not speak from Himself, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will announce the coming things to you.

John 16:14 That One will glorify Me, for He will receive from Mine and will announce to you.

John 16:15 All things which the Father has are Mine. For this reason I said that He receives from Mine, and will announce to you.

Please think about these things, research, pray and search the Scripture about this.

I hope everyone has a Blessed and safe week.

Shalom

Mr.Meanie

I get this, POIC. A couple of years ago some people I know were making such a big deal about water baptism(even claimed without it one couldn't enter heaven). God began speaking to me through scripture and the IN MY NAME kept jumping out at me. Thanks for sharing this!!

I think what is important here is the text says "name" rather than "names", ie the singular name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Yes!! I think you're hitting the nail on the head POIC. I'd like to add, and I believe you bring this out, that the word "name" means "the character and nature". Names always tell us something about the person or thing. In this case the object ot discipleship is to immerse people into the nature and character of God. However there are other references to baptism in the NT which tell us that the disciples baptized people in the name of Jesus. I think that in this case "in the name" refers to the authority given them by Jesus to do so but the baptism was according to the "great commission" and not always or necessarily in water. Most references in the NT to baptism are not about water baptism, unless of course you're a Baptist. LOL

Number one, how many times is the word disciples used in the epistles?

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.

41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

That doesn't fly here. the baptism is a separate act.

Acts 8:16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

Reads the same again.

Acts 8:35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

8:36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

8:37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

Acts 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

10:45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

10:17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

18 And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.

Again a separate act
