What Is The Purpose of a Fast?...
Posted : 21 May, 2011 11:07 PM

If we truly follow God's teaching we would know that God does nothing without a purpose to beaccomplished. There must be a goal or objective in the thing we do and especially spiritual things. There mus be a pirpose to accomplish when fasting, if there is to be a spiritusl break through from God.

So waht is a spiritual fast according to what God says?

Definition of a spiritual fast: A fast is going without food to pursue or focus on something important spriitually. A fast helps to subject our bodies to our spirit.

Points.

1. Fasting is disciplining our bodies, mind, soul, and spirit.

2. Fating is submitting our fleshy desires to our spiritual desires.

3. Fasting helps set the priorities in our lives.

4. Fasting is longing to receive God's spiritual blessings in spiritual things.

Purpose why we as Christians should fast before the Lord.

1. To bring our attention and focus on God

2. To teach and train oursleves in spiritual disciplines, self control, learn obedience, increase our faith, and bring us into humility.

3. To move God in a mighty was in our direction during times of troubles and hardship/

4. To provide time as a sacrifice in order to hear instructions from God, and receive answers to prayers.

5. To receive all the spiritual blessing God has for us and to become overcomers.

Fasting brings us closer to God in many ways and we find ourselves operating more spiritually than in the flesh. Prayer and fasting gives us great power to war against the trick of the devil as Jesus did in the wilderness. God also calls for Christians to fast and pray on behave of the poor and needy, and when this is done He promises He will greatly bless us.

This is the "Bible" discussion section, I think you must be looking for the opinion section!

To answer your question, yes I used to fast quite regularly, the longest was 7 days without any food and the last three days of it without any food or water...absolutely nothing.

Btw, I know what the Bible says about fasting and your post borders on 'manipulation'. There is a proper way to fast and a improper way, I've done both.

Since you already know the bible verses aut fasting then you don't that I should post the verses.

And since this is a Bible discussion, and you already know the verses about fasting , then why not just be so kind as to add verses to the discussion,. As well as those things that you know about the proper way to fast and those things that are not proper, and stop trying to always be be a fault finder of nonessential things instead of and add to, and not substract from... what's your purpose and intent? Either you're productive in contributing or you're actively destructive...

If you know as you say, then share and explain... ! And what do you mean by bordering on manipulation, you are always making grand comments of your own carnal opinions, but you never give spiritual informatiomn based on Biblical correction.

First of all you have a opinion on fasting and I am curious as to what verses YOU use to support your position, I already know mine....I was asking for yours.

Secondly; Why don't I positively contribute to your post, I thought I was by asking for more information.

Thirdly; Why don't I contribute my information? ...cause you're argumentive.

Lastly, about spiritual correction; you're argumentive.

Thank you Ice for sharing those few passages in accordance to my post on fasting. As you know there are many, but these are great which leads me to take a look at the last one you posted.

Jesus tells the disciples that the only way they could cast out a stubborn demon or unclean spirit was through prayer and fasting seeking power from God through the Holy Spirit to cast out sickness and dis- eases.

When we spend time in prayer and fasting seeking the blessings of, and from God, this should also include those spiritual blessings for the work of ministry. God will grant us power to cast out demons and unclean spirits as He has required of us, and give us all that we have need of spiritually, because this pleases God when we make the sacrifice to fast and spend time alone with Him in prayer and fasting. Then He knows we are even more serious about our requests made to Him.

God also tells us that the proper fast that he calls believers into is to pray and fast for the release of those who are in spiriitaul bondage as well as for those behind prison door without a reason. We are to pray and fast To loose the bonds of wickedness(demons and unclean spirits that hold people down, breaking every yoke that brings a person in to captivity to do the will of the devil, pulling down every strong hold that exhorts its slef against the things and people fo God..

We are also taught to fast and pray as I stated, for the poor and needy and those who are hungry and the homeless and those in need of clothing and shelter, as well as for God to provide for our own family members who are poor and needy, and that people will be given shelter, and we are to provide these things as well.

God says when we fast and pray for these things to met the needs and to receive spiritual blessings of power in other people lives, He will bless us with all the spiritual spiritual blessings and physical blessings we need to meet our own personal needs. Isaiah chapter 58

@ ET:

Could we discuss what you have posted here?

ET says:

Purpose why we as Christians should fast before the Lord.

1. To bring our attention and focus on God.

POIC:

I do not need to fast in order to bring my attention and focus onto GOD.

What i need to do is to turn away from the things i do that take up time that can be used for Knowing ABBA.

ET says:

2. To teach and train oursleves in spiritual disciplines, self control, learn obedience, increase our faith, and bring us into humility.

POIC:

I do not need to fast for these, especially to having faith strengthened.

What is needed is for ABBA to bring tests, trials,

tribulations, and persecution to have faith strenthened, self control, learn obedience, and bring us into humility.

Oh but we don't want these,OH MY NO!

Mat 17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

ET says:

3. To move God in a mighty was in our direction during times of troubles and hardship/

POIC:

This is an extremely proud statement,to think that you or anyone is able to move the hand of El-Shaddai/GOD ALMIGHTY.

The GOD of Abraham,Isaac and Jacob, does not do anything apart from His Will, and His good pleasure.

All of this is done to Glorify Himself.

Isa 46:9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,

Isa 46:10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

ET says:

4. To provide time as a sacrifice in order to hear instructions from God, and receive answers to prayers.

POIC:

I do not need to fast for this,i just need to ask faithing into Christ and trust Him to answer.

Instruction, just read the instruction manual,KNOWN AS THE WORD OF GOD!!!!!

Sacrifice:

Psa 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

ET says:

5. To receive all the spiritual blessing God has for us and to become overcomers.

PIOC:

I will just let the Word of GOD speak to this statement.

Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

How many spiritual blessings,CAN SOME SAY THE word 'ALL'.

So then which spiritual blessing am i to fast for,NONE.

ET says:

Fasting brings us closer to God in many ways and we find ourselves operating more spiritually than in the flesh. Prayer and fasting gives us great power to war against the trick of the devil as Jesus did in the wilderness.

POIC:

Again let us see what is written in the WORD OD GOD,concerning this matter.

Eph 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

Eph 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Eph 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Eph 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

Eph 6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

Eph 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Eph 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

I do not see even the hint of the word 'fast, fasting, going without food and or water'.

ET says:

God also calls for Christians to fast and pray on behave of the poor and needy, and when this is done He promises He will greatly bless us.

POIC:

Let us once more look to the INFALLABLE,TRUE,AND TRUSTWORTHY,WORD of GOD.hahahahahahahaha

Isa 58:3 Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.

Isa 58:4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.

Isa 58:5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?

Isa 58:6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

Isa 58:7 Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

Isa 58:8 Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.

Isa 58:9 Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am

In all of the above,i do not need to fast.

I need to ask ABBA for the willingness, and faith to being an insrument in His hands unto these.

John 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Sparrow,i believe you have it right;

People seem to want to twist the Arm of GOD,along with His word;

In order to make both say what the person wants the Word and ABBA to be saying.

Manipulation is the word.

Pro 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
