Hello everyone:

I think we might find this to be an interesting Scripture.

Again we need to go back to the Greek for the understanding.

The title in most English translations is:

The Unprofitable steward:

My question: Is Unrighteous Steward the subject of the Scripture,or is there something else that is Unrighteous?

Remember context when reading this in Greek.

Luke 16:1-9

1 And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.

2 And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward.

3 Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord taketh away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed.

4 I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.

5 So he called every one of his lord's debtors unto him, and said unto the first, How much owest thou unto my lord?

6 And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty.

7 Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, An hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and write fourscore.

8 And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.

9 And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.

If the steward is unrighteous, why does his 'Boss' commend him in his stewardship?

Why does Christ tell us to use the mammon to make friends?

Could we have bad translations out there?

Maybe even people teaching and proclaiming things not found in the Scriptures, hmmmmmmmmm

This Scripture is about using what God gives us in this world to store up treasure in heaven.

Sorry bro, I hear alot of rhetoric, however read no support or proof for why you disagree...absolutely none. Perhaps you didn't understand since it was in plain English instead of Greek.

Being a person that deals with debtors on a daily basis I would view this as there being a steward that didn't do anything to bring a profit to his boss. When he heard he was in trouble and likely to lose his stewardship he went out to those that had bad debt with his boss. Instead of collecting all the money that was due he collected a percentage of it, that is he arranged a settlement and when he took this to his boss his boss realized that he was smarter than he looked!!

I think the principle here is that it isn't about what a great job you do for the Lord but that you show up redeemed. I see this as a story of redemption. What was lost could be considered a loss and so written off. No bad debt is so bad that it can't be salvaged and healed. And not man is so lost that he can't be found.

@PhillipJohn

Hey Phil:

No special revelation, just revelation as the Holy Spirit takes the things of Christ and makes the known to me.

Luke 16:8

Here is the way the English has this written.

Luk 16:8 And the lord commended the unjust steward,

In the Greek language from which this verse and chapter are translated from;

This particular verse is quite different then it looks.

The steward is accused of wasting the goods put under his stewardship.

The GOODS,not the Steward are unrighteous (Look this up for yourselves).

The steward is commended by his master.

The word for commend here is:

G1867

ἐπαινέω

epaineō

Thayer Definition:

1) to approve, to praise

Part of Speech: verb

A Related Word by Thayers/Strongs Number: from G1909 and G134

This supposed unrighteous steward was PRAISED APPLAUDED for his stewardship.

This is quite different then what is being taught today.

Now how does this apply.

Aloha

Oh please already and get to the point. If you are gong to do a study in Greek then why not post the Greek transliteration side by side with a English translation and ask for discussion on it and you can explain your view with everyone elses'. Quite frankly I see no different meaning in the transliteration than in the English and have been patiently waiting for your insight on this.

I can understand why you post this here in the Bible Discussion/Question section since this Forum does not have a Riddle section.

Our ability to understand this is really not that hard. It is so simple that a child could do it.

Thunder got it right on.

two made his response to short- but had it right.

Well, I prefer Hebrew to Greek:ROFL:

The view should be, the stewerd knew that his time was up and did as thunder said. The spiritual thing is to preach and get people saved so they can go to heaven. Then all the evil you have done will be forgiven.

I will not look the Hebrew up two, I should, but will not. :dancingp: :nahnah:
