Are you referring to the fact that it was a pagan holiday celebrated in Rome before Constantine made Christianity the official religion of the Roman empire? Or the fact that the Roman church adopted it and changed the focus to Jesus because people refused to stop celebrating the date?

Where do you stop with this kind of research? What about Easter being a fertility festival celebrating Queen Esther, the fertility goddess? What about the robes worn by the Catholic Priests to this day? What about the rosary? Or the Trinity? Or birthdays? Or Halloween? Christmas trees? Crosses? Fish symbols?

Christianity has lots of roots in paganism, but if we concentrate on those things, and not Jesus, what is the difference between us and the Pharisees? Christianity is about what is in our hearts, not legalism. Should we be aware of these things? I think yes, but only so we can keep our focus on the Father, and everything He did for us, including sending His Son.

The Kingdom of God is not eating or drinking, or holidays, or legalism, or judgment, or any of those things that distract us from what is important. What matters is that God demonstrated His own love for us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Focus on love, from a pure heart, and you can't go wrong.

Keep studying brother, but stay focused on what matters. Eternal life is knowing the one true God, and Jesus Christ, who He sent.

Love and peace,

Leon

Leon makes a good point. In support of that I'd like to add that Paul weighed in on an argument about whether it was okay to eat food sacrificed to idols. He said that if it was sinful to you, you weren't to do it. If it wasn't sinful to you, then eat all you want. But that whether or not it had been sacrificed to an idol was basically meaningless. There is also the concern of whether it causes your brother to stumble.

To me that sounds germaine to your comment about Christmas (or other holidays for that matter).

Well, I do know the history behind the history but I think you have to choose. It's neither here nor there except what's in your heart and it should be on Jesus...We can make anything an idol in our lives but true worship and love will sort these issues out.
