JUST IN FROM ANOTHER THREAD: TONGUES

In reading the Book of Acts, I see that Peter wasn't part of the groups that spoke in tongues. Peter had a better gift of knowing what was happening and explaining it and harvesting a crop of new believers.

Looking at Paul's writings, it is obvious that not all Christians should be speaking in tongues. They should pray to receive the greater gifts.

I think one of the greatest gifts is of those who no matter where they go they wind up helping someone accept Christ.

Here is something that most folks don't know. Among the Hindu followers, there is speaking in tongues.

Years ago, I met a woman (1st date) and I knew by her church that speaking in tongues was a big item. I told her that I had a problem with the teaching people how to speak in tongues. Doesn't the Holy Spirit know how to just give it? She replied that she really didn't teach them but instead let them watch and listen so that they got the idea.

Funny thing is; it doesn't sound like a language. There is too much rhyming and too much repeating of words. The worst case was a pastor saying, "To drink,......to drink, to drink, to drink. To drink!"

I have even run across folks who claim that God can't hear prayers that are not in tongues. No body gets saved I guess.

OKAY! LET THE BRONCS OUT OF THE CORALS AND LETS RIDE 'EM COWBOYS AND COWGIRLS:yay::bouncy:

BTW the "pray to keep it a secret from the devil" I have heard that before. I laughed the first time I heard it cause I thought it was a joke, then I found out they were serious.

I do however think this is a serious issue to be honest. Some people think it is not and as long as you have the essentials then all is good. I can accept that on issues such as pado baptism, (as long as it is not a means to salvation) but this is prayer! A direct line of communication from God to man. I can not follow the logic with the out of context stretched scripture quoting. I picture this, when Jesus was saying on that day, many will say, "Lord, Lord, we prayed in tongues in your name."

Personally I do not know one person that claims to speak in tongues who is a Christian. The fruit of their life style tells me all I need. And not one person I know who is a Christian claims to do this. In fact all the "Christians" I know speak against it.

I have known people who had a candle burning in every window. When asked why they respond that it keeps the Devil out. He doesn't know about doors or how to go through walls. Plant a hedge around your place for protection. Call it a hedge of protection. The Devil hates foliage, he doesn't know what to do about it.:rolleyes::goofball:

You Sir keep bringing up the Gift of tongues, that is not the same as receiving the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues.

Paul didn't speak in tongues when he received the Holy Spirit.

No sign needed.

This topic is about tongues and isn't limited to a certain type of tongues.

I would love to see what verse can b twisted to say Peter spoke in tongues.

As for Paul, anyone who knows biblical history knows Paul was an educated man and was fluent in at least 6 languages. When he speaks of tongues, he worked for his.

1Co 14:22 Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe.

After all those twisted scriptures people use to say there is more than one type of tongues, Paul states clearly that this is a lie. He tells us the whole purpose of tongues, and there is only one. For a sign to unbelievers.

Verses 14:2, 4 which were used to try to prove the point of praying in tongues, the bible doesn't say pray, it says speak. Everywhere else in th bible when someone prayed, it said prayed. Are we to believe that in this one and only spot, speak means pray? Pray was used several verses before and after this, in context. What? Are we to believe God made a mistake?

Leon is believing the word that is written that is considered twisting by you?

Acts2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

1 And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.

The key is those that heard the word believed, very simple.

This is a bible example of two witness for Leon, of Peter speaking in tongues.

Jesus made it real clear, those that believe the lord Jesus received the word, those that that do not believe him will not receive the word of God.

Acts 11:14 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.

14 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.

15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.

16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?

God gave them the Gift just as he did us, what Gift is that?

Acts 11:14 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.

15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.

16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.
