Ok! Here's something I'd like to talk about some more...for a couple reasons. First reason! It's what I believe. Second reason! I would like it tested by the bible warriors on here. This is the bible battleground after all, why not put my beliefs to the test? I could be wrong, and if I am I'd really like to know.
Here's the scriptures I believe support my belief that when people die, they are in an unconscious state until the second coming of Christ. I honestly don't know absolutely, but it seems like the weight of scripture at least supports an unconscious state after death until the second return of Christ. There are some in heaven, like Enoch, Elijah, and Moses are the only ones I know of for sure. There were many resurrected at the resurrection of Jesus. But I believe as a whole...most of God's followers and all the wicked are resting in the grave until the judgment. So if its ok, I'd like to see the scriptures that contradict my views and support your views...because honestly, I could just be searching the bible for what I want to see.
*1 Thessalonians 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 14For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. 15For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. 16For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life."

* 2 Peter 3:4 "[...]for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation."
Sorry, floodnut....somehow I missed your posts. I'm not going to go into much detail about them because I already did. You didn't bring much scripture to the table, so I'm just going to say that 1 or 2 verses are easily twisted and misinterpreted. The amount of times a concept is talked about is not proof in itself....it's supporting evidence. And I still have to point out that not all the verses I posted say "sleep". I think you're saying that if one verse contradicts a lot of verses...then it's the one verse that wins? Here's a list again. I would like these explained to me, like I tried to explain the verses that support your belief. I would also think it was cool if someone could provide me with a list of their supporting scriptures as well.
John 6:44. "No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day."

Daniel 12:13 "But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days."
Ecclesiastes 9:4-6,10. "For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion. Acts 2:29. "29Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day."
Acts 2:34 "For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand".
And this one is my personal favorite about this topic...
John 14:3 "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, ye may be also."
And this is kinda a stretch but it was a interesting comparison...
James 2:26. "26For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
A body without the spirit is dead? Faith without works is dead? What about works without faith?
Here's another one I just found recently...
Revelation 20:4And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshiped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
Here it refers to martyrs AFTER the resurrection as "souls". Hmm...pretty sure we get our heavenly bodies at the 2nd coming...I guess the ones that got beheaded don't get bodies then...
Genesis 2:7And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.(Body+Spirit of God=Soul)
Job 27:3 All the while my breath [is] in me, and the spirit of God [is] in my nostrils;
So...allll those verses that say "last day, last day, last day, sleep, sleep"...you say they all just refer to our bodies. Well, then where are all the verses that say we're celebrating our victory in heaven. Wouldn't those verses be a little joyous tidbit that the bible is strangely silent about? I would expect Paul or someone to say something like "Oh, as soon as we die we will be singing with the angels at Jesus's feet in ghosty spirit form". Anyway...you say the "spirits" are conscious and singing in heaven...I would like to see the bible verse that gives you that belief....because I just gave a couple that say that when you're dead/asleep you don't think or give praise to God. There's even one that says our love perishes when we die. There's even one that says a "man after God's own heart" isn't in heaven yet. Kinda implies unconsciousness to me. Those verses seem pretty obvious. Maybe they're better then your two or four or however many you've got.
"Truth is truth and our sentimental emotional feminized (EG White) misconceptions about the being and nature of God will not ever change who He really is."
Here we go again....I didn't see any Ellen White quotes in this post. I'm pretty sure I used a lot of supporting scripture for my beliefs. But if we're going to go that route then I hereby denounce your pseudo-pagan belief system. Take that. I'm right, you're wrong...let's eliminate all discussion and fire prejudiced remarks at each other!:goofball:
Godislove, I do appreciate what you said. This is not a salvation issue. No matter what we believe about this, people resting in Jesus are never separated from God. I've just had a lot of people tell me my beliefs are "erroneous" lately, and I would like to double check. When someone says I'm "in error" it makes me want to be sure where I stand, instead of just blasting them with "Whatever! You're wrong about me being wrong! Shutup!" People don't seem to understand this, but if I did find scriptural support for the other side I would switch over. I mean it, and nobody knows my motives except God....but I have to defend what I believe is the truth at the same time....I hope that makes sense.
....well, I don't believe that people burn in hell forever anyway...but if it were true, and people were conscious in hell...then I'm pretty sure you'd at least be conscious of the fact that the punishment was never-ending...whether you counted the seconds or not. So.....a punishment that is never-ending...eternal...forever...through all time...doesn't ever stop...that's a long time. I don't believe God would do that, and I don't believe the bible supports that belief. I do believe in hell, and I do believe in punishment, but I believe it will be according to what the person has done...and then they're destroyed. Burned up. Ashes. They do not exist anymore. It's hypocritical of God to give both the saved and the unsaved eternal life...whether they're on fire or not.
I'm not really understanding what you mean by God being hypocritical for giving us eternal life? John 3:16 popped directly into my head. I just can't grasp this concept at all. I'm sorry I'm having such a hard time. I'm very thankful that God hasn't given me what I deserve because it wouldn't be very good at all! Haha! I don't deserve to breathe, but He let's me continue. I wish I could help but without being able to understand your/their position, I don't think I'll be able to. I'll keep them on my prayers.
Well...it would be hypocritical because God would be giving the saved eternal life...but the wicked would also get the same thing. Sure, they're supposed to be on fire the whole time, but they are alive right? Forever?
