JUST IN FROM ANOTHER THREAD: TONGUES

In reading the Book of Acts, I see that Peter wasn't part of the groups that spoke in tongues. Peter had a better gift of knowing what was happening and explaining it and harvesting a crop of new believers.

Looking at Paul's writings, it is obvious that not all Christians should be speaking in tongues. They should pray to receive the greater gifts.

I think one of the greatest gifts is of those who no matter where they go they wind up helping someone accept Christ.

Here is something that most folks don't know. Among the Hindu followers, there is speaking in tongues.

Years ago, I met a woman (1st date) and I knew by her church that speaking in tongues was a big item. I told her that I had a problem with the teaching people how to speak in tongues. Doesn't the Holy Spirit know how to just give it? She replied that she really didn't teach them but instead let them watch and listen so that they got the idea.

Funny thing is; it doesn't sound like a language. There is too much rhyming and too much repeating of words. The worst case was a pastor saying, "To drink,......to drink, to drink, to drink. To drink!"

I have even run across folks who claim that God can't hear prayers that are not in tongues. No body gets saved I guess.

OKAY! LET THE BRONCS OUT OF THE CORALS AND LETS RIDE 'EM COWBOYS AND COWGIRLS:yay::bouncy:

As to the events as described in Acts 2 (where disciples speak in tongues) I would like to comment the following:

It states very clearly in Acts 2 verse 6, that they all heard them speaking in their own language!

This event, Pentecost, is a healing from the event from the tower of Babel.

The Tower of Babel leads to a desicion that God confuses through languages.

Now, at Pentecost, after everything has been achieved through Jesus Christ, His Son, God decides to gather people through languages.

I strongly oppose to people who try to mystify the speaking in tongues, as if it were an elite gift from God, making a difference between one person and another. People who lift themselves up like that, wanting to be considered specially gifted through God, are extremely dangerous and dead wrong.

God wants to gather us around Him. The speaking in tongues is therefore not something we cannot understand, but quite the opposite, something we can understand.

The wonderful message of Christ, is spoken in languages that other people, from other countries and cultures, can understand.

That is the power of the Holy Ghost. It is a language that goes straight to the heart. No cultural or linguistic barriers! Simple people, are given the right words, to speak the message of God to people all over the world.

No more tower of Babel....... God is gathering His beloved creatures, through the Holy Ghost we can speak to the hearts of anyone!

But please, no mystical, pagan moaning around!

Read Acts 2. The purpose of Acts 2 is not to be mystical, it is to be understood.

SOS4EMAILFRIEND, and I might add the Lord also is in agreement with your thinking in Verse 2 Timothy 2:16 that states: But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

That is why in 2 Timothy 2:15 we are told to study so we won't be ashamed when we stand before the Lord one day.

1. To utter a meaningless confusion of words or sounds: Babies babble before they can talk.

2. To talk foolishly or idly; chatter: "In 1977 [he] was thought of as crazy because he was babbling about supply side" (Newt Gingrich).

3. To make a continuous low, murmuring sound, as flowing water.

v.tr.

1. To utter rapidly and indistinctly.

2. To blurt out impulsively; disclose without careful consideration.

No PJ, you are well aware of what we are speaking of here. It is the babbling of those pretending to speak in tongues today. The gift of tongues is always a known language, anything else is man made doctrine.

Now, if you do it in the privacy of your own home or when you are alone, and you feel it brings you closer to God, then I have no problem with it. However that is seldom the case, usually it is all about putting on a show, and that needs an audience.

So you say experience is the teacher, and not the word of God.

It is very interesting how you respond to the word, and continue the truth posted here. The topic is the Gift of the Holy and the evidence of speaking in tongues, not the gift of tongues.

When one receives the Holy Spirit he can in tongues any time according to man's will.

The gift of tongues is as the Spirit wills.

It is in every occasion recorded of receiving the Holy Spirit, in the presence of others and all spoke every time.

Again the emphasis is on the Gift of the Holy Spirit, if have received the Holy Spirit it is evidenced by praying in other tongues.
