What Must I Do To Be Saved?

In Reformed Theology, this must be a bummer of a question if asked of them by an unbeliever. After all, the doctrine of Total Depravity would render this question as impossible to answer because man is so totally depraved he can't see past his sin, doesn't have the ability to even consider God, is without hope, and there is absolutely nothing he can do to be saved, much less ask how to be saved.

So why did the unbelieving keeper of the prison ask Paul and Silas, "what must I do to be saved?" And why did they answer, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved"?

Where in the question is Total Depravity? Where in the answer is Irresistible Grace? What, Dear Reformed Theologist, must I do to be saved?

I just got back to this post, I read your statement to me PJ and wish to clear this matter up.

About reformist as you call them. They are saved and going to heaven. They were men too who were imperfect like us.

Not one of us can understand all the things of God. Some of us choose to accept certain teachings for various reasons.

My defense of reformist is because I went to the Luthern church as a child. They teach mainly salvation and living right. I understand what I came out of. The reformation was like a new born baby, it was Gods way of beginning to renew the church and get it out of bondage. They were men and women justlike us, imperfect. We all are flawed. We all miss God truth in certain areas.Dennis

Also, it must be realized when the word 'dead' is used in the favorite verses of the reformer it is used as "dead to" which makes it a metaphor.

James replies:

No.

not "dead to" SPIRITUALLY DEAD! There is physical death and Spiritual death, and physical life and Spiritual life.

Genesis 2:15

The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die."

Adam did NOT die physically when He ate the fruit.

HOW then did He "die"?

Satan tells eve of a SPIRITUAL AWAKENING!:

4 But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

And they ATE of the fruit,

AND they immediately HIDE FROM GOD.

The died spiritually that very day, JUST AS GOD HAD SAID.

Then we have Jesus saying "you MUST be BORN AGAIN".

Well, in what way? Nicodemus talked about physically being in His mothers womb again, and Jesus said what?

Unless a man is born again first, he cannot possibly see or enter the kingdom of God.

The key phrase in Paul's Letter to the Ephesians is this:

"...even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace have you been saved)" (Eph. 2:5).

Here Paul locates the time when regeneration occurs. It takes place 'when we were dead.' With one thunderbolt of apostolic revelation all attempts to give the initiative in regeneration to man are smashed!

Again, dead men do not cooperate with grace. Unless regeneration takes place first, there is no possibility of faith.

In Christ,

James
