Is God a murderer?Posted : 12 Feb, 2010 07:47 AMOk....so, many times in the old testament there examples of God committing what would appear to be genocide in our eyes. Killing off whole cities, destroying everything...leaving nothing alive...but if you look closely enough, you can see that God always gives people a chance. Look at the flood. Evil in this world was at it's highest peak, but before God destroyed everything He gave everyone 120 years to listen to Noah, and to repent and board the ark. Didn't help much, but He did it. Nineveh...God sent a prophet to tell them they were going to be destroyed, and here's a good example of God's mercy. They repented and He withdrew His sentence. Sodom and Gomorrah. Again, God would have spared the city if there would have been 5 good people. Lot and his family made four. They couldn't find one other good person in either city. The land of Canaan. Here's a good example of God's plan throughout history. There were two reasons the Israelites were made to wander through the desert for 40 years. First reason was a punishment for their lack of faith and obedience. Second reason was that the Amorite's(and possibly all of Canaan's inhabitants) sins had not reached their fullness, God had given them around 500 years to repent. In Genesis 15:13-16 God reveals a prophecy about Abraham's children. Anyway...I guess my point is that even though God executes these punishments, He has always given people a chance to turn away from their sin, and the bible probably doesn't record all the things that God did with these increasingly evil people to try to bring them back to Him...who knows how many prophets and messengers He sent. It's not God's will that any should perish, but sin causes everyone to perish...so He kinda has to get rid of sin. Destroying the wicked is a "strange act" for God, but He has to destroy the wicked to save the innocent. Evil people have free will, and they use it to choose to disobey God and avoid His salvation. True...they would probably all repent if they could see their end, but that is not true repentance. Fear of punishment is the wrong motivation. |
