Context Matters: You Have Heard That it was Said…But I Say to You
JULY 27, 2018 BY PETER KROL
Perhaps you’ve heard about Jesus’ disagreement with the Old Testament. The people of Israel had received a set of laws through Moses, but Jesus trumped them in his Sermon on the Mount. An extreme version of this view might say that Jesus disregarded the Old Testament law and put a new law in its place. A softer view might say that Jesus took the outwardly focused OT laws and added to them an inward dimension, focused on the heart. But perhaps we should take a closer look.
My goal in this post is not to develop a comprehensive theology of Old and New Testaments, nor to explain what our thinking should be on the OT law. My aim is more focused. I want to look at just one passage that some might use to claim that Jesus either set aside, or in some way added to, the law of Moses.
Context matters. If we learn to read the Bible for what it is—and not as a collection of independently assembled proverbial sayings—we’ll discover that some of our most familiar passages don’t actually mean what we’ve always assumed.
The Pertinent Formula
I’m referring to Jesus’ repeated formula: “You have heard that it was said…But I say to you…” (Matt 5:21, 27, 31, 33, 38, 43). Seems clear enough, right? You have heard what Moses said—you shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, and so on—but I have something new and/or different to say. Moses was great, but I am greater. The old has become obsolete and is ready to disappear; the new has come. The law of liberty. The law of love. The law of Christ.

The Immediate Context
But look at where Jesus just came from. Remember that the Sermon on the Mount was a sermon. It was all spoken at once. In fact, what Matthew has recorded to us could be spoken out loud in about 10 minutes, and it’s highly unlikely that such large crowds would have gathered on a mountain for only a 10-minute speech. So Matthew has likely condensed and summarized all that Jesus actually spoke that day. But the point remains: Don’t break it into tiny pieces. Read the sermon as a unit.
And right before Jesus launches into his sixfold “but I say to you” formula, he makes the following introductory comments:
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matt 5:17-20)
Jesus could not be more clear about the fact that he did not come to abolish the Law. Certainly, we can debate what exactly it means that he came to “fulfill” it. But there is no question that Jesus did not come to abolish it (Matt 5:17). Heaven and earth will pass away before the tiniest stroke of the Law passes away (Matt 5:18). And Jesus has no goodwill toward anyone who would relax “one of the least of these commandments” or teach others to relax them. The great ones in his kingdom are those who do the Law, and who teach others to do it (Matt 5:19). And to even enter Jesus’ kingdom, we must have a righteousness that exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees (Matt 5:20).
Interesting. Note all the contrasts lined up in a row:
Jesus came not to abolish the Law :: Jesus came to fulfill the Law
Heaven and earth will not pass away :: The Law will be accomplished
Anyone who relaxes even a single command, and teaches others to do so, is least :: Anyone who does the commands, and teaches others to do them, is great
Scribes and Pharisees [presumably, by the sentence’s logic] will not enter the kingdom :: Those more righteous than scribes and Pharisees will enter the kingdom
So Jesus contrasts his purpose (fulfill) with what is not his purpose (abolish). And he contrasts right use of the law (do) with wrong use of the law (relax). And he contrasts those who get into the kingdom (more righteous than scribes) with those who don’t (scribes).
And then… He works through 6 more contrasts, 6 case studies, having to do with the Law. “You have heard that it was said…. But I say to you….” The context therefore suggests that the 6 contrasts of verses 21-48 are following on the theme of verses 17-20. In other words, they are contrasting those who abolish or relax the commands with those who do them and teach them.
The Quotations (OT Context)
But that doesn’t make sense of the fact that Jesus actually quotes the Old Testament laws! The thing he is negating is the Old Testament text. The OT Law. “You shall not murder,” “You shall not commit adultery,” and so on.

LittlestDavid has Satanically stated that Jesus never broke **ANY OLD TESTAMENT LAWS** and never taught us to break any Old Testament Laws???
**BUT WHAT DOES GOD'S WORD SAY**
Luke 13:10-14: On the **SABBATH** Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for 18 years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, He called her forward and said to her "Woman you are set freefrom your infirmity. Then He put His hands on her and immediately she straightened up and praised God. Indignant because Jesus healed on the **SABBATH**, the synagogue leader said to the people, "There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the **SABBATH**!" {As per Exodus 20:9,10}
Three times Jesus healed people on the Sabbath which was breaking the OT law since doctors could only heal people on the 6 days before the Sabbath but not on the Sabbath unless the person had to be healed immediately!
Exodus 31:14-16: Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it is to be put to death; those who do **ANY WORK** on that day must be **CUT OFF** from their people... Whoever does **ANY WORK** on the Sabbath day is to be put to death!
Exodus 35:2,3; Whoever does **ANY WORK** on the Sabbath must be put to death. Do not **LIGHT A FIRE** in any of your dwellings on the Sabbath day.
Matthew 12:1-12: Jesus went through the grainfields on the **SABBATH**. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, the said to Him, "Look your disciples are doing what is **UNLAWFUL ON THE SABBATH**. Jesus answered, "Haven't you heard of what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread--which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests... If you had known what these words mean, 'I desire mercy not sacrifice, you would not have condemned the innocent. For the Son of Man is **LORD OF THE SABBATH**!" Going from that place, Jesus went into their synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to being charges against Jesus, they asked Him, "IS IT LAWFUL TO HEAL ON THE SABBATH?" Jesus said to the, "If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath?" Jesus said to them, "If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? Therefore it is lawful to do good {*WORK*} on the Sabbath!"
John 5:16-18: So because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute Him. In his defense Jesus said to them. "My Father is always at His work to this very day, and **I TOO AM **WORKING**!" For this reason they tried all the more to kill Him; not only was **HE BREAKING THE SABBATH**, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
John 9:16: The Pharisees said of Jesus, "This man is not from God , for He does **NOT KEEP THE SABBATH**!"
Jesus also taught all His disciples that they could immediately eat any **UNCLEAN FOODS** that are mentioned in Exodus 11:1-47! thus breaking 15 OT dietary laws!!
Mark 7:18,19: Jesus says, "Are you so dull?" He asked. "Don't you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him 'unclean'? For it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body." In saying this. Jesus declared **ALL FOODS "CLEAN **. For what comes out of a person is what defiles them. For it is from within, out of a person's heart, that evil thoughts come, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils com from inside and make a man **UNCLEAN**!"
And so now everyone can eat Shrimp and Lobster tails which are yum, yum yummy and so good for the tummy!!

It’s always good to be alert to the extreme false teaching of prophetic 7744, the arch-heretic of CDFF.
I suppose some site’s see a need for an onboard heretic perhaps because of the lively discussion they create. And so the Pinocchio Prophetic has found a place to roost here. But somebody must take the responsibility to clean up all the heretical droppings.
Keep in mind this VERY EVIL false prophet claims “Jesus broke many laws” thus making Jesus a lawbreaker and a liar because to the contrary, Jesus very emphatically said he DID NOT break any laws.
Jesus DID NOT break any laws (if you chose to believe him) but he did trample afoot the demonic anti-law traditions of the false teachers.
But contrary to many “civil and nice Christians” today who just seem to “love” false teachers while hating those who expose them, Jesus spoke out against false teachers and their evil traditions. He even called them “snakes, white washed tombs and hypocrites”!! Oh I can see these “civil Christians” shrinking in horror at the thought off that
In Jesus day, false teachers routinely corrupted the Mosaic law by nullification with their demonic manmade traditions just like the false prophet 7744 has been doing nearly every day here.
I notice I’m the only one calling out the false prophet 7744, especially his attempts to make Jesus out to be a sinful lawbreaker. I hope I’m mistaken but it appears no one else seems to care about Jesus’ true reputation as the sinless Son of God.

Galatians 3:10-13: "**ALL WHO RELY ON OBSERVING THE LAW ARE UNDER A **CURSE**, for it is written "Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law." Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, "The righteous will live by faith." The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, "The man who does these things will live by them." **CHRIST REDEEMED US FROM THE **CURSE** OF THE LAW** by becoming a curse for us!

Friends! This is how utterly "weak and useless" Richard's OUT OF CONTEXT usage of verses has become! This is the perfect example of how Richard is incapable of teaching on this forum! NOTE how Richard7744 cannot understand what the book Hebrews says in its CONTEXT - That the former "regulation" of animal sacrifices and priestly duties is NOW "set aside" because it has FULFILLED its purpose in the ONE and ONLY sacrifice which is Christ on the pole/tree! Christ sacrifice is a "better hope" that was "introduced" by means of the pole/tree and because of that we as Christians can "draw near to YHWH" our Father for sending a part of Himself in the flesh to die for our sins!
So tell me friends, how on YHWH's stable and non moving earth does Richard miss that simple teaching???

So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. Now that faith has come, *WE* ARE NO LONGER UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF THE {**OT**} LAW!!"

Note now how Richard attempts to distort Paul teachings in Galatians 3:10-13 once again! The subject is circumcision and how the Pharisees were making a legalistic teaching that gentiles MUST be circumcised! Paul is saying NOTHING about the LAW was done away with! Paul is setting his gentile converts FREE from that legalistic aspect of that teaching!
Friends how does Richard7744 miss this simple contextual truth in Paul's letter to the Galatians??? Simple he IS a false teacher!

Hebrews 8:8,9,13: "The time is coming." says the Lord, "when I will make a New Covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah".... Hebrews 10:8-10: Jesus said to His Father, "Sacrifices and offerings , burnt offerings and sin offerings **YOU DID NOT DESIRE** nor were you pleased with them--though they were offered in accordance with the law. Colossians 2:16,17: Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you **EAT** or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a **SABBATH** day. These are a *SHADOW* of the things that were to come, the reality, however, is found in Christ!!!
