My first Bible was a KJV. I always wanted one and still use it along with my NIV student Bible.

Personally, I prefer my NIV simply because I like to read the references. KJVs are better, but you don't get the footnotes the you can find in some of the more modern versions.

I use the New American Standard version. It is harder to read than the NIV, but if you want to know what the literal translation is; it is there. Here's an example from the NIV:

AC 16:16 Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17 This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, "These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved." 18 She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so troubled that he turned around and said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!" At that moment the spirit left her.

In verse 17 we read, "...the way to be saved."

However, that is not what she literally said. Here is what she said: "...who are proclaiming to you a way of salvation."

Notice that she really said: "...a way..." This could mean that all roads lead to Heaven and it is why Paul cast out the spirit.

I don't believe that the Translators of the King James were inspired by God. In Psalm22:21 they have: "...the horns of the unicorn...." Also, the first of the KJV's had Judith instead of Judah.

KJV? Nah...NKJV is decent, but reading KJV is almost like reading a foreign language...translated from Latin. NASB translated from the Greek has a more complex sentence structure, but is more in tune with the author original intent.

Umm, for all those above who are "king james only" because they think it is the most accurate translation we got some problems. A) Greek (and armaic for that matter) don't translate well into english so there has to be some interpretation hence B) Good translations interpret the original meaning and put it into today's words. If you haven't noticed today's words IS NOT old english, therefore you are not going to understand the original intent because you don't understand old english phrasing. And C) The king james was translated form LATER manuscripts, manuscripts that are less accurate than the ones translated into say the ESV, NIV, NASB. Of the ones translated into TODAY's english, the NASB is the most literal translation, almost to the point of not being able to understand it because it is so literal. The ESV and NIV are the most literal while trying to change over meaning.

Also, to add, the King James is not even that literal of a translation, they added quite a bunch to make it a very discriptive and beautifully written bible at the time, but hey, isn't that what we're arguing against?

I have learned over the years.. although KJV is absolutely awesome and amazing.. that you can expand into different versions and get so much more out of it... I mainly get into KJV and NASB and NLT.

That is a very good explanation. Also I think that the KJVO issue has torn apart many churches that otherwise should have stayed together... it is alienating Christians from Christians.
