In reading the Book of Acts, I see that Peter wasn't part of the groups that spoke in tongues. Peter had a better gift of knowing what was happening and explaining it and harvesting a crop of new believers.
Looking at Paul's writings, it is obvious that not all Christians should be speaking in tongues. They should pray to receive the greater gifts.
I think one of the greatest gifts is of those who no matter where they go they wind up helping someone accept Christ.
Here is something that most folks don't know. Among the Hindu followers, there is speaking in tongues.
Years ago, I met a woman (1st date) and I knew by her church that speaking in tongues was a big item. I told her that I had a problem with the teaching people how to speak in tongues. Doesn't the Holy Spirit know how to just give it? She replied that she really didn't teach them but instead let them watch and listen so that they got the idea.
Funny thing is; it doesn't sound like a language. There is too much rhyming and too much repeating of words. The worst case was a pastor saying, "To drink,......to drink, to drink, to drink. To drink!"
I have even run across folks who claim that God can't hear prayers that are not in tongues. No body gets saved I guess.
OKAY! LET THE BRONCS OUT OF THE CORALS AND LETS RIDE 'EM COWBOYS AND COWGIRLS:yay::bouncy:
I have a question for anyone that will answer, what was the believers waiting on in Acts Ch 1. The reason I Ask that question is you can not respond as you have and know the truth of this topic.
Jesus gave the final instructions. He told the disciples that they would receive the Holy Spirit and would be baptized by the Holy Spirit.
There was not one word about anyone or everyone speaking in tongues.
Going on to Chap 2
I have heard people say that they were speaking in tongues but none of what happened in chap 2 happened as they started in repeating sing song rhyming words. No language was spoken as was the case in Acts 2
None of the discples were taught how to speak in tongues.
Why was just tongues covered here. I have yet to see whole church groups go to a hospital and go room to room telling people that in the Name of Jesus Christ they are healed and clearing out the hospital.
In South America they know that someone has received the Holy Spirit because the people get up and dance but they don't speak in tongues.
I have read every word in the Bible about 20 times now. I believe far beyond what most can even comprehend. When I was baptized by the Holy Spirit, I received understanding and not the least of the gifts.
If you read ALL of Acts you will find that the vast majority of those who received the Lord as their Savior did not start speaking in tongues.
Paul clearly tells us in I Corinthians chap 12 that in the body all are not teaches, all are not healers, all are not prophets, all do not speak in tongues.
Any group that teaches that all can have one of the gifts is going against the teachings of the Bible.
I'll go with what Paul wrote.
ACTS CHAP 19:15 AND THE THE EVIL SPIRIT ANSWERED AND SAID TO THEM, "I RECOGNIZE JESUS, AND I KNOW ABOUT PAUL, BUT WHO ARE ?"
You haven't answered the question yet, I know exactly what Paul taught, you are still avoiding the question. Just to clarify with what you said I realize you said I will Go with what Paul taught, Yes Jesus uses men then and know but the word of God is from him not the word of Man.
Since you agree with what Paul teaches, don't forget the fourteenth chaper of first corinthians.
Where did the comment about being born again come from, talking about the first chapter of Acts.
The bible teaches that if one speaks in tongues during a gathering of believers there must be a interpretation. Some are given the gift of tongues and some are given the gift of interpretation.
So here is the problem I am having;
You are speaking in a tongue I can understand, but I don't know what you are saying.....I need a interpretation!!!....LOL!.....seriously; With all due respect; what are you getting at, cause I am confused. Can you just spell it out?
Where in Acts 1 is anything about being born again?
I Cor 14 Paul makes it clear that all do not speak in tongues and he lays down rules for what should happen if anyone is to speak iin tongues. He also lays out the problems that can happen in a church service.
I hope this will help in this topic on tongues. A majority of churches today (ie Pentecostal/Charismatic churches) do NOT practice biblical tongues-speaking. As many have already known, the stuff going on in these churches involves random people, sometimes everyone, who just shout off a bunch of gibberish with no control over themselves. What we must realize is God has clearly given a correct procedure for speaking in tongues, and in order to be biblical, we must honor His procedure. The apostle Paul outlined this very clearly in 1 Corinthians 14.
The Procedure:
1. 2 or a maximum of 3 people can speak in tongues.
2. They must take turns one at a time
3. There must be an interpreter
4. If no interpreter is present, no one can speak in tongues
(1 Corinthians 14:27-29) If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must interpret; but if there is no interpreter, he must keep silent in the church; and let him speak to himself and to God. Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others pass judgment.
Paul even said that to dishonor this procedure, and for everyone to just randomly speak in tongues whenever they please (like in Pentecostal/Charismatic churches), this is damaging to the church (1 Corinthians 14:23).
And whoever refuses to acknowledge and honor this procedure, whether it be a lay person, a pastor, or a church, Paul said the procedure was the direct commandment of Christ, and whoever denies it is not acknowledged by Scripture, the apostles, or the Lord, as a Christian, pastor, or church. Scary stuff! If you're in a church that's like that, get out and find one that actually honors God.
