Do you agree with France banning the full face veil that is often used by Muslim women to cover their face from view?

Is it an attack on religion as a whole or is it an attempt by France to recapture its Christian roots?

I cannot list them, but Muslims have 'denominations' just as Christians. If they don't want to wear a veil, they should choose to change denominations.

Either way...the French government should stay out of it.

I am in favour of it being banned and I would like to see it banned in the UK also.

Imagine if your husband forced you to get a giant tattoo of a cross on your face and then claimed that the bible gives him permission to do so. How would you feel?

I don't think any of the 3 religious books (quran, taurah, bible) intended there to be inequality between men and women.

The face veil creates inequality!!!

It has nothing to do with a face veil, as you demonstrated in your example.

It is about freedom of religion.

I respect your opinion as your own, I just don't agree with it. :)

I pray we don't have to deal with such things on this side of the pond. :)

I don't have a problem with banning face coverings purely on the grounds of security (the same reason I'm not allowed to wear a helmet or balaclava in a bank), but I'd be against it if it was to ban religious observance - what's sauce for the goose...

Now whether it liberates women or not depends on whether they *want* to wear the veil. If they don't, then they're liberated in as much as that law is enforced, if they do then they're now restricted in the same measure.

I'm by no means studied on the Qur'an, but I don't believe full facial obscurity is mandated as such, it's just how some interpret it. As such, some muslim women are for it, and other against it, but it's technically not a religious requirement, rather an identity.

Unfortunately the comments about choosing whether to be a muslim and which branch of Islam to obey are pretty much moot. Muslims risk death (even in our countries where we promote freedom to choose religion) by making that choice. If nothing else, most would be excommunicated from their family and friends. The newspapers are not short of stories of "honour killings" where the (usually female) relative has been murdered by a family member for bringing dishonour on their family - often by yearning for a western style of living we take for granted.

In short, there really is no choice as such for most muslim women unless their families are only nominal muslims.
