repent, Repent, REPENT!!! Repent from what?

I find it curious that I have NOT found the phrase "repent from your sins" in the New Testament. Is this something we have all just assumed? Is this something that has been taught so much that we take it as incontestable? Is there another meaning that agrees with the Gospel?

I think so.....

I agree that it means to turn around and go another, usually the opposite, way. The English army still uses the command when marching and means to turn around, like our "about face". I believe the greatest indicator regarding a person being born again is that it is evident they have turned around and are living a lifestyle that is opposite of the way things were for them in the past.

I agree with you Thunder! But does repentance mean salvation? A man can turn his life around from drugs and alcohol and live a clean and sober life, keep a job, stop beating his wife, be good to his kids and give to charity, but none of that means he is saved!

We see this happen daily! But we don't see Christians as a result, why?

PJ are you a universalist?

You don't think sin is a big deal. GOD came down off His throne to live a very poor life, at a very hard time in history and was beaten and killed because of sin. I would say THAT makes sin a very big deal! If it was just about reconciliation then GOD would have never had to send Jesus to pay the debt sin bares down on us.

And because of our selfish pride and arrogance we would NEVER see that as a problem (like you) so GOD had to choose who He would save because none of us would seek after him! I think Jesus died for the elect.

This is one point I won't beat my fist on a table about because Jesus' blood is sufficient to save the whole world but the whole world will NOT be saved.

I have a question for you PJ. I want your opinion since you hate the doctrines of grace. What about perseverance of the saints? Someone professes Christ for a season then abandons the gospel and goes back to their lives in sin. Was they saved to begin with? Can't wait for you answer and I really mean this it has been a heavy subject on my mind lately.

*Note : The passages quoted by Marikashome are paraphrased translations. I cross referenced them with the NAS and NIV and would have to say the paraphrase is incorrect. They fun to read but I don't rely on them for serious study. I have checked the NIV and the NAS the phrase "repent of your sins" is not in the New Testament.

Thank you all for posting, here is another thought on the same subject :

To "repent of sin" can be done under the Law right? We can turn away from sin and turn to the Law, but it does not give new life. John the Baptist taught repentance for the forgiveness "of" sins, the Gospel teaches repentance "and" forgiveness of sin. I see nowhere where it is taught that the forgiveness of sin is dependent on the repentance of sin (except for one sin).

For the sake of discussion I am going to say "repentance of sin" is a byproduct of the Gospel. And that the Gospel calls us to repent from something else very specific. From the very thing that got us into this mess.

I think I know what it is......

Mr Row, it seems to me that forgiveness is extended to us. Jesus died for the sins of all men, right? He came to save the whole of creation and in fact His death and resurrection puts that forgiveness out there for anyone to take. So, because it is available to all people it actually comes down to which way you walk. We all start out walking the wrong way but some of us will "see the light" and turn around and walk the other way. So I believe that there is no forgiveness without repentance and repentance is not possible without forgiveness.

The work of the Holy Spirit is to make us more Christlike. If a person sees that his life is going in a wrong direction and he repents and makes a turn for the better, is possible for us to know if it is because of salvation or not? Isn't it possible for someone to be saved without ever confessing it to anyone or walking down an aisle or responding to a tract or street evangelist? I think it's very possible that people are saved without ever actually hearing the gospel or responding to an altar call. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. If someone hears the call of God and responds to it isn't that salvation?

OK I agree that an alter call does not save...in fact it is unbiblical and I find I won't stay in a church long that does alter calls, because those churches teach, "ask Jesus into you heart" and "accept Jesus" to be saved and neither of those saves a person either.

A criminal can be sorry for his crime and promise to never do it again but does that satisfies justice? No it does not! I believe it is two sides of the same coin. Repent and trust Jesus that saves a person. Without Jesus and some knowledge of the gospel no one can be saved. I think a lot of people think they are saved are not but no one that doesn't know Jesus as savior is saved.

Now how much knowledge a person needs that is the question. I believe we in the USA will be held to a higher standard because we have a bunch of bibles on our self and some with enough dust to write damnation with our fingers. But in some countries where owning a Bible is illegal and they rip pages out so the can take it home to read and memorize then exchanges those pages in secret. Or have no Bible at all. Well those people may not know as much, all they have is trust in Jesus. GOD will not hold them to the same standard. And before the Bible was printed I am sure many got saved through someone telling them the good news of Jesus. But know one is saved that doesn't know they are saved through Jesus Christ.

MrRow, I believe that a person can repent without being saved simply because a death is still required for sin. Jesus stood in our place at Calvary, and therefore by faith in Him we accept the work He did on the cross, we accept His death in our place.

Without faith, we cannot accept His sacrifice, and without His sacrifice, there is no salvation. Yet salvation is more even than accepting that He paid the price for our sins on Calvary. We are saved to walk in newness of life, we are given a new life in Him. That new life, to me, is salvation, more than the initial snatching away from death.

Twosparrows, are you thinking, possibly, that we must repent of our denial of God, our rebellion against God, or our disobedience to God?

I've enjoyed reading everyone's responses so far and look forward to more responses tomorrow. Thanks all for your input.

'Repentance from sin' does not save, bring forgiveness or new life.

However....

If we were to 'repent' from trying to be righteous and accepted by God through our own works or through the Law to receive life it would......

*Save us from the Law that condemns.

*Save us from our own conscience.

*Release us from the old way of being righteous and accepted by God...

*...Because we are released from the old way, our sins are forgiven.

*We "repent".....we turn from the old way to the new way of 'Life' by being led by God's Spirit....that IS the U turn of repentance!

*** We have to repent of thinking righteousness, acceptance, eternal life and Gods Love is something we can achieve by our works and turn to God confessing we can't make it happen, but believe He loves us enough to die for us and give us His Spirit, through which HE WILL make it happen for us!

GRACE SAVES NONE, IT IS BY FAITH THAT COMES FROM HEARING THE WORD OF GOD AND NEVER BY THE LIES OR INTERPRETATIONS OF SATAN. THERE IS NO FAITH FOR THE NEW BIRTH IN THE WORD OF GOD OUTSIDE OF ONE THAT IS LOST. MR ROW JESUS CALLS ME A BELIEVER
