Hello everyone:

I think most Christians have heard this Scripture either spoken,or taught upon at some point in their lives.

Matt 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

What is Yeshua/Jesus saying to Peter, the disciples, and then to the body of believers.

Remember as the Scripture is read,this is not written in English,but in Greek;

Spoken in Hebrew or Ariamaic, being understood by Hebrew men.

With that being said, try understanding this as a Hebrew man would understand this.

Please be a thinking person, not one that just reads what someone else has written about this,That person just might be wrong.

the bible talks many times about foundation. yes peter is referenced as a stone on which the church will be built, but i think there is another point that is possibly being missed. that verse also says that the gates of hell will not prevail against the church. how often has the church gone on the defensive to "hold what we have already conquered" instead of pressing on the attack to further the kingdom of God. the band demon hunter puts it a good way in one of their songs called storm the gates of hell:

Wake the lifeless, die to fight this

Stand beside me, storm the gates of Hell

Wake the lifeless, die to fight this

Stand beside me, storm the gates of Hell

Storm the gates of Hell

remember that gates are a defensive structure. anywho im done for now, or else ill end up going onto a huge rant about stuff.

As we're playing our songs, while we're singing them well

Have we forgotten the lost, the reality of hell

If we say we love God, wanna see His will done

Will we offer our lives, or just the songs we have sung

Do we even care, when will we care. - Lyrics from Rescue the Perishing

Hi everyone,

I came across this forum topic while perusing profiles. This is very interesting.

Re: Matt. 16:18, "And I also say to you that you are Peter (Petros, Peter's name in Greek), and on this ROCK (PETRA-meaning ROCK or Large mass in the Greek language), I will build my church and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it." These two words, Peter and Rock are two totally different words in the Greek language.

Anyone who wants to check this out can go to a Strong's Concordance and check it out for themselves. Please do this and don't take my word for it. We all need to be like the Bereans in our search for the truth.

God could never build His church upon a man, as ALL men are fallible, flawed and all have sinned and come short of His own glory.

We all have need of a savior, and Jesus is no respecter of men.

He can only build His church on THE Perfect ONE who was and IS sinless. That leaves ALL of mankind out of the running. Also, because no man should boast, or be worshiped, God could not build His church on any human being!

Thanks for listening :)

Lois
